- In this talk I will analyze the different ways in which late Nineteenth and Twentieth Century philosophers have dealt with what Hannah Arendt has termed 'the fact of natality'. Starting with Nietzsche's idea that the child indicates a type of 'creative forgetfulness', we subsequently turn to Arendt's own connection between the child and the issue of memory. With Benjamin, we discover the issue of a 'metaphysics of youth' where the child is not assiciated with a possibility to begin, but with the necessity to end.
