The mainstay of research and education at the Graduate School of East Asia Cultures is cultural interaction studies. This field of research seeks to elucidate comprehensive modes of total cultural interaction while looking at cultural generation, diffusion, contact, and change within the fixed commune of East Asia. This entails transgressing the established research frameworks of established fields of humanities and national studies. The objective of this area of academic inquiry is to comprehend cultural interaction in East Asia as a whole, and to cross borders in nurturing an understanding of East Asia as comprising of diverse cultural connections. Research in the Graduate School of East Asia Cultures will focus on the three fundamental areas of “East Asian Languages and Symbols”, “East Asian Thought and Structure”, and “East Asian History and Dynamics”. Graduate students will choose one of these three areas as the basis for their studies, and will endeavor to develop their research by going beyond their initial fields and regions of investigation.
