Environmental and Urban Engineering Major
Architecture

Architecture, as both an art and a science, comprises aesthetic, social, and economic aspects as well as technical ones. The field accordingly offers many interdisciplinary subjects, so as to equip students to meet the requirements for qualification as a professional architect, urban planners, architectural engineers, and architectural researchers. These subjects are grouped into three categories: the Architectural Design and Planning Group, which deals with planning, design, history, and theory, the Structural Engineering Group, covering structural principles, analysis, and construction technology, and the Environmental Engineering in Architecture Group, which deals with such environmental sciences as lighting, acoustics, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning.
The field maintains close links with the Architectural Institute of Japan, through a variety of academic research and practical work. The field also encourages students to enter design competitions and to take part in joint research programs with other institutions.
