Professional Development Series #7: International Partnership Building and Global Learning for All

IIGE wrapped the 7th and final session in the IIGE "No Turning Back" Professional Development Series on February 16, 2022 with a workshop on "International Partnership Building and Global Learning for All."

The workshop description is below.

The new era of international education explored in this workshop series rests on a fundamental principle: global learning works best when it is based on global collaboration. This understanding has fueled a dramatic worldwide surge in developing and expanding international partnerships in higher education. Up to now, however, most institutions of higher education have been little engaged with such partnerships, and most partnerships that do exist have done relatively little. This workshop explores concepts and practices that can change this situation. Based on the research literature and our own experiences guiding partnership programs at both Japanese and U.S. universities, the workshop begins by leading participants in exploring what robust institutional partnerships add to COIL and other next-generation modalities for global learning. It then turns to elements increasingly recognized as producing effective, sustainable, mutually beneficial, and equitable partnerships that deepen understanding, generate new activities, and open opportunities for international interaction to even more students, faculty, and institutions.

This workshop was facilitated by international education experts Susan B. Sutton (U.S.), Yuichi Kondo (Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Japan), and Hiroshi Ota (Hitotsubashi University, Japan) who shared the differences in institutional partnership building for COIL in Japan and abroad. Attendees were able to get a clear picture of the core elements essential to successful partnerships and had the opportunity to share their own insights and network through guided discussion sessions throughout.
