Gateway Seminar Series #4: Toward Establishing a New Research Agenda for International Learning and Engagement

The IIGE Professional Development Series 2021 "NO TURNING BACK: Welcoming a New Era of International Learning and Engagement. 国際学習とエンゲージメントの新しい時代を迎えて" held its fourth session, "Toward Establishing a New Research Agenda for International Learning and Engagement," on October 13th (JST). In this webinar, the panelists (Dr. Krishna Bista, Journal of International Students; Dr. Betty Leask, Journal of Studies in International Education; Dr. Audrey J. Murrell, Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad; Prof. Stephen M. Ryan, Journal of Intercultural Communication (SIETAR Japan)) introduced their respective academic journals and highlighted the importance of aiming to build new knowledge that challenges existing practices, advances the field, and improves the experience and impact of international education, as well as the responsibility of journal editors as gatekeepers for the credibility of published research.

Moreover, the need to provide solutions that address current learners' needs, especially with regard to the issues of socio-economic challenges in international education, both during the pandemic and beyond was highlighted. Facilitator and co-sponsor of the series, Dr. Anthony C. Ogden (Gateway International Group) observed "[These new modalities for international learning are] not a replacement of education abroad, but an enhancement."

The session concluded with a round robin in which the panelists gave the following advice on the topics their journals are currently looking to address to young scholars:

"I want to see something that grows out of your experience that allows your passion for your topic to be channeled in directions that can be passed to reviewers who can approve of the way you have expressed it."

"At Frontiers we give you permission to cross boundaries."

"I'd like to see you engaging in a continuing conversation with other people who have similar interest and concerns and making connections with people who have different ideas so you are picking up on interculturality and thinking about things from different perspectives and asking new questions."

"If you don't have a deep love of the topics, never dare to write on that."
