Kansai University has been at the forefront of COIL initiatives in Japan and was awarded significant funding from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) under the Inter-University Exchange Project, "Supporting Exchange with U.S. Universities Using COIL-style Education." With this funding, Kansai University launched the Institute for Innovative Global Education (IIGE) in 2018 to disseminate COIL.
The "Inter-University Exchange Project," launched in 2011 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), aims to support international educational collaboration between higher education institutions in target countries and regions that conduct study abroad programs, guaranteeing the quality of education and contributing to the development of global human resources who can play an active role internationally.
This is an educational collaboration program that involves the active acceptance of Japanese students to study abroad and foreign students, while utilizing COIL-type education with U.S. universities to guarantee the quality of higher education, with the aim of fostering human resources who can perform internationally and strengthening the ability of university education to develop globally.
Kansai University is the only institution selected to serve as a platform for promoting both Type A (implementing COIL education practices) and Type B (promoting inter-university exchange through COIL) activities in Japan.
COIL Courses
In the spring semester of 2014 Kansai University implemented COIL classes for the first time. Since then, COIL has been incorporated into courses in various disciplines.
COIL Plus Program
Students will draw upon the knowledge and skills gained in pre- and post-COIL activities in short-term study abroad programs, which will afford them the opportunity to take part in temporary overseas staffing experiences, internships, corporate visits, and local classes in line with specialized themes. Students from Japan and the U.S. will also be able to further deepen their exchange by meeting in person.
Conducting seminars/workshops for faculty and staff
Sessions are offered to university administrators, faculty members, educational institutions, and others who are interested in COIL.
JPN-COIL Association
We promote exchange through COIL and various training programs as well as information exchange on COIL practice to Association members.
ImmerseU
An online platform that allows for the centralization of activities to facilitate COIL exchange.
IIGE Global Network
Built for the implementation and development of COIL subjects. It has now spread to universities in Asia, North America, South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
I-Paper
The IIGE whitepaper, known as the "I-Paper," is a resource periodically provided by IIGE to those interested in developing the "next new normal" in international education using COIL, EduTech, and digital technologies.
Verification of learning effects of COIL-type education
An assessment room has been set up, and various tools are being piloted and analyzed to verify students' learning effectiveness and language proficiency in COIL programs.
