Gateway Seminar Series #5 : Emerging Pedagogies for International Learning and Engagement

IIGE and Gateway International Group hosted the 5th session in the IIGE "No Turning Back" Professional Development Series on November 17, 2021 titled, "Emerging Pedagogies for International Learning and Engagement" that addressed "...not how our students learn and engage but how we can enhance that learning and engagement through innovative and effective pedagogies" through an interactive panelist discussion with Dr. Stephanie Doscher (Florida International University, USA), Dr. Yuichi Kondo (Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Japan), Dr. Claire Macken (RMIT University, Australia), and Jennifer Malerich (Arizona State University, USA).

The session opened with an exercise in which panelists shared their thoughts and impressions of a set of images meant to fuel discussion on the current state of international education, followed by a round-robin Q&A facilitated by Dr. Anthony Ogden and Dr. Keiko Ikeda.

Some of the key takeaways from the webinar...

"The mission of higher education is to exchange and produce knowledge. No institution can achieve their mission in a globalized, diverse world -- a deeply interconnected and networked world at all scales: locally, regionally, nationally, internationally -- no institution can produce relevant, useable knowledge without internationalizing, without connecting to the other people, institutions, and parts of the world that hold the pieces of the puzzle that we don't have. And the core of that, the lynchpin, is the curriculum. When the teacher and the student enter an essentially connective mindset, that extends throughout the entire institution, throughout all of our research, our engagement, our leadership, our policies, our organizational structure, and it will impact your ranking as a global institution... It starts with the curriculum and then it extends to the world." - Dr. Stephanie Doscher

"I think it's time for us to really do some kind of 're-,' like re-framing, re-inventing...for university education as well as international education. In the past international education is more like a decoration or icing on the cake, but now I think that the real sponge part must be internationalized because there's no excuse that we cannot do it. We have online means and we have MOOKs, etc. available so we now can do it...we have to re-establish our universities so that we can meet the demand of society. It's going to be painful...but for the benefit of the students' learning that some drastic measure must be taken." - Dr. Yuichi Kondo

"I do think we need to come up with a really clear taxonomy of how we internationalize a curriculum across multiple areas. So not just thinking about one particular cohort of students but looking at the whole curriculum and being very clear on the purpose and benefits of having a global experience. And I still believe that the experiential and immersive aspects of internationalization is very different from this online environment... and we need to be very clear on when they are positioned within the curriculum," - Dr. Claire Macken

"I think we need to get away from the discussion pitting in-person and online education against each other...We've got to get to a point where education is personalized to the learner and where that learner is in their learning journey. I think different disciplines, subjects, and concepts can be taught different ways in each modality. I really want to steer the conversation away from better or worse, to how are these different, how are they the same, and how can we employ them for different learners when they're needed. I really think that blended learning is the way we need to move forward..." - Jennifer Malerich
