Global Competence Program Concludes with Cross-Campus Experiences and Student Reflections on the SDGs

Kansai University’s Global Competence Blended Program concluded its two-week journey last Friday, wrapping up an enriching and dynamic schedule that brought together 41 students from the United States, Spain, Thailand, and Malaysia to explore sustainability, intercultural competencies, and global citizenship.

The second week of the program saw participants visiting Kansai University’s Sakai, Umeda, Takatsuki Muse, and Senriyama campuses. At Sakai Campus, students attended lectures on Sports and Well-being and Intercultural Communication and Japanese Culture, where they examined the role of physical activity and cross-cultural understanding in building sustainable communities. These academic sessions laid the foundation for deeper conversations later in the week on Critical ThinkingLeadership, and Entrepreneurship, which are core competencies for addressing global challenges.

Off-campus, students toured the newly developed Grand Green Osaka district, gaining insights into sustainable urban planning and redevelopment. A visit to the "Youth" exhibition celebrating the architectural legacy of Tadao Ando further deepened their appreciation of how design can inspire community and environmental awareness.

A major highlight of the second week was a lively exchange session at Senriyama Campus, where the students joined Kansai University students for an afternoon of cultural sharing and connection. The session included a gesture-based game, an international snack exchange, and photo-based introductions to each student’s home culture and campus life. These interactive activities created a relaxed and engaging atmosphere that encouraged meaningful conversations, cross-cultural learning, and the formation of new friendships.

The program culminated with final poster presentations, where student groups shared reflections on how youth can remain engaged in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) beyond the World Expo. Drawing from experiences in their home countries, participants analyzed successful initiatives and proposed actionable strategies tailored for the Japanese context. Ideas ranged from community-led environmental campaigns to education programs that promote sustainability through innovation and social entrepreneurship.

As the Global Competence Program came to a close, students departed with broadened perspectives, lasting memories, and lifelong friendships.
