Envisioning Sustainable Futures: Kansai University PSU Program – Week 2 Recap
The second week of the Kansai University PSU Program immersed students in the theme of sustainable cities, encouraging them to explore innovative solutions for urban sustainability based on real-world examples from the Portland community. Through hands-on experiences, engaging workshops, and collaborative discussions, students developed a deeper understanding of sustainability challenges and the role individuals can play in creating positive change.
Engaging with the Community
Students participated in various site visits and volunteer activities that showcased sustainable practices in action. A key highlight was their volunteer work at the Oregon Food Bank, where they helped pack frozen beans, contributing to the fight against food insecurity. To gain insights into sustainable food systems, students also visited the People’s Food Co-op, an initiative that promotes organic and local food, as well as Mama’s and Hapa’s Zero Waste Shop, a business dedicated to reducing packaging waste. Additionally, students explored Hawthorne, Portland’s well-known thrift shopping district, where they conducted interviews with thrift shoppers to understand consumer motivations and the impact of second-hand shopping on sustainable consumption.
Workshops on Global Sustainability Goals
Guided by lecturer Katy Fairly, students participated in workshops focused on key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty (SDG 1), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12). These sessions provided critical insights into global challenges and the interconnectedness of sustainability issues.
Students also had the unique opportunity to join the final session of the Intergenerational Climate Workshop Series, facilitated by Frank Granshaw. Prior to this, students had participated in two online workshops as part of the blended format of the program, which focused on climate impacts and assessments. The on-site workshop in Portland focused on developing innovative solutions for international climate action. In this final workshop, students collaborated with PSU students and Portland residents to devise solutions for sustainable neighborhoods, drawing on their experiences from the week’s site visits and discussions. The program also featured keynote speakers from ICLEI USA and the University of Minnesota Climate Resilience Initiative, who provided valuable insights on local and global sustainability efforts.
Final Projects and Presentations
As the program neared its conclusion, students dedicated time to their final projects, where they were tasked with addressing a specific SDG-related challenge. Each team identified actionable solutions that students could implement in their daily lives or communities. On the last day, they presented their ideas, showcasing creative and practical approaches to sustainability.
Celebrating Achievements
The program wrapped up with a recognition ceremony, celebrating the students’ efforts and contributions throughout the two-week experience. To conclude their journey in Portland, students visited the Portland Art Museum, reflecting on the intersection of art, culture, and sustainability.
Through hands-on engagement, critical discussions, and collaboration with local communities, the second week of the Kansai University PSU Program provided students with valuable insights and practical knowledge to contribute to a more sustainable future. Their experiences in Portland will undoubtedly inspire them to take meaningful actions in their own communities and beyond.
