Faculty of Engineering Science Q&A

What is "Engineering Science"?

This faculty conducts education and research related to "creating mechanisms and systems." It is broadly divided into "science" which focuses on the principles of systems, and "engineering" which applies and refines those principles.
Since understanding and clarifying principles is important for creating mechanisms, the four departments have very strong connections.

I have subjects I'm not good at in mathematics or science. Will I be okay?

We have established a learning support room aimed at improving basic academic ability in subjects such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
The learning support room staff respond to questions about reviewing classes, assignments, and study methods, and provide follow-up support so that you can understand university lectures.

What are the characteristics of the lectures?

University lectures cover the latest content in science and engineering based on each professor's research.
There are also lectures in which senior students participate as teaching assistants, which helps deepen your understanding and interest.

What is special research?

Starting from the fall semester of the third year or the spring semester of the fourth year, you will belong to a laboratory and conduct research for one year.
You will receive direct guidance from faculty members, work on problems for which answers are not yet known, and compile the results as a graduation thesis.

I heard there are many lectures and practical training, and it's busy?

Science and engineering faculties not only have many lectures but also emphasize experiments and practical training, so including time for preparation and review, it may be difficult to create free time.
However, there are many students who balance extracurricular activities such as club activities and volunteer work.

How do classes proceed in experimental and practical training subjects?

Students are divided into small groups to conduct experiments. Experimental results are explained using graphs and tables and submitted as reports.
These are important subjects where difficult theories can be understood as actual phenomena by experiencing them concretely.

What about the IT environment?

The university has an IT Center as a facility. In addition, there are several hundred computers available for lectures within the faculty, providing an environment where high-speed internet and major software can be used. Furthermore, using the campus wireless LAN "KU Wi-Fi," you can connect your own laptop or mobile information terminal to the campus network and use the internet.

How many female students are there?

The number of female students who entered the Faculty of Engineering Science from 2022 to 2025 is shown below. Note that a special entrance examination for women has been implemented from 2025.

I heard it's advantageous for employment?

The Faculty of Engineering Science has excellent employment results and is top-class at the university, which already has good employment conditions, with many job offers from manufacturing and information and communication sectors.
The Career Center Engineering and Science Office is set up for science and engineering faculties and provides detailed support for job hunting activities, including recommendations from departments.

Are there many people who go on to graduate school?

The graduate school advancement rate is quite high.
In science and engineering faculties, students learn basics at the undergraduate level, study more specialized content at graduate school, and aim to become full-fledged researchers and engineers by devoting themselves to research to cultivate the ability to apply their knowledge.

Faculty of Environmental and Urban Engineering Q&A

What do you do in the "Special Research" subject?

You belong to a laboratory and receive guidance from faculty members while setting your own theme and conducting research.
Finally, you compile the results as a graduation thesis (some students in the Department of Architecture do graduation design).

I heard many people take an English test called TOEIC® L&R.
Are good scores reflected in university grades?

It can be applied to part of the foreign language credits mainly taken in the first and second years.
However, it is important to continue with foreign languages. Please continue studying independently even in the third and fourth years.

The students featured in "Learning Styles" are graduate students.
Should I go on to graduate school?

There are many people who graduate from undergraduate programs and are active in society.
However, if you want to acquire more specialized skills, we recommend advancing to graduate school.

I've heard the term JABEE. What is it?

JABEE (Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education) is an organization that evaluates and accredits whether university educational content and systems meet the required standards of society.
The educational program of the Department of Urban System Engineering is accredited by JABEE.

Is it true that there are subjects where you submit reports from a computer?

We use a learning management system (Kansai University LMS) where you can view materials and assignments posted on class-specific homepages and submit reports.
You can study anytime and anywhere if you have a computer connected to the internet.
Of course, there are also many computers available for free use on campus.

To what extent does the university support our job hunting activities?
Also, can I participate in internships at companies, government agencies, schools, etc.?

The Kansai University Career Center holds various seminars from the first year onwards to support students in making solid career plans.
The university arranges internships and recognizes them as credits.
Each department also provides detailed support in the form of various lectures and recommendations to companies.

Faculty of Chemistry, Materials and Bioengineering Q&A

How many female students are there?

The number of female students who entered the Faculty of Chemistry, Materials and Bioengineering from 2022 to 2025 is shown below.

Dept. of Chemistry and Materials Engineering Dept. of Life Science and Biotechnology
2022 75 (30%) 59 (50%)
2023 69 (29%) 64 (50%)
2024 95 (33%) 77 (67%)
2025 95 (38%) 68 (62%)

Can I conduct research related to environment and energy?

The Department of Chemistry and Materials Engineering studies and researches environmental and energy issues at the molecular level. For example, world-class research on environmentally friendly catalysts contributes to significant reduction of greenhouse gases. Research is also being conducted on methods to generate hydrogen, which is attracting attention as next-generation energy, methods to store hydrogen, and fuel cells that generate electrical energy from hydrogen and oxygen.

The image of the Biomolecular Chemistry Course (Department of Chemistry and Materials Engineering) is unclear.

Please think of the Biomolecular Chemistry Course as a boundary area between the Applied Chemistry Course and the Department of Life Science and Biotechnology. Mainly, research is conducted to create substances and materials with new functions (that are useful) using molecules obtained from living organisms [= proteins, polysaccharides (such as starch), nucleic acids (DNA), etc.], or conversely, to create artificial substances and materials with new functions that act on living bodies (human bodies) or nature. For details, please refer to the Department of Chemistry and Materials Engineering's own homepage.

Are there qualifications that can only be obtained in the Department of Life Science and Biotechnology?

Food Sanitation Supervisor/Food Sanitation Inspector and Health Food Manager. Food Sanitation Supervisor/Food Sanitation Inspector is a national qualification that anyone can obtain by completing prescribed credits and graduating. For Health Food Manager, examination eligibility is obtained in the third year by completing prescribed credits.

I want to enter the Department of Life Science and Biotechnology but didn't study biology sufficiently in high school. Will I be okay?

You'll be fine. In the first year "Biology" lectures, we conduct classes at a level equivalent to high school biology. Biology lectures at university are content that can be fully understood if you approach them with interest.
