Friday, November 6, 2020

Affected by the spread of the new coronavirus, many aspects of our society are increasingly going online. This trend will continue unabated as we move into the Society 5.0 era, an ultra-smart society that utilizes the latest technologies.

This wave of change will also be felt in international education at universities. With the continuation of simultaneous global isolation, it is difficult for students to study abroad and exchange programs that involve mobility, and this is affecting Japanese universities, which have traditionally made study abroad a core part of their international education. In this context, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), a form of virtual exchange that uses online lectures, is attracting attention and has the potential to become a mainstream way of learning in the society 5.0 era.

In this online seminar, Dr. Keiko Ikeda, Vice President of Kansai University's International Affairs Department and Institute for Innovative Global Education (IIGE), was invited to talk about COIL in detail with practical and successful examples.

She discussed what kind of changes and support are needed for the development of international education in the Society 5.0 era. Springer Nature also introduced changes in the use of textbooks (e-books) during the pandemic.
