The 2023 COIL Plus and Laboratory Internship Program was held as a part of ongoing and expanding collaboration endeavors between Kansai University and Clemson University. This Summer COIL Plus program gave participants opportunities to visit Japan and work on research in collaboration with professors and students from the Kansai University Department of Chemistry & Materials Engineering from June 5th to August 4th, 2023. 
 
Prior to their departure, Clemson University students met virtually with their Kansai University peers to get to know each other and to complete weekly tasks to prepare for the collaborative research project and stay in Japan. 

 

Upon arriving in Japan, the 14 American students were given the opportunity to pursue their own mentored research project in one of the 30 laboratories participating in the program. The main research fields included materials sciences, applied chemistry, and biomolecular chemistry. Upon consultations with the Kansai University professors students could choose their own research topics, and at the end of the program, they gave final presentations on the results of their individual research.

 

This annual program not only allowed the students to acquire hands-on experience in world-class laboratories and a wonderful opportunity to develop their research skills but also provided opportunities to learn about Japanese culture and business by joining field trips (including a visit to Terumo Medical Pranex) and cultural activities on campus.
