Cross-Cultural Competence: COIL Online Presentation

On June 9th, Kansai University students in Assistance Professor Sajjad Pouromid’s Cross-Cultural Competence class presented the cultural magazines they previously prepared as part of their COIL collaboration with University CEU San Pablo students.
Although the class has been meeting on Zoom due to COVID-19, they were able to present in small groups, taking turns listening to their peers’ presentations and were given the opportunity to ask questions about the influence of culture on different aspects of primary, secondary, and tertiary education in Japan and Spain.

The students, who had collaborated with their peers in mixed-nationality groups for seven weeks, interpreted their findings with reference to Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory. They were able to reflect critically on the differences between education systems in Japan and Spain, framing their arguments with the six dimensions of power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and indulgence.
