KU-CU COIL Plus Program

Kansai University COIL spans a wide range of courses and programs, neither limited to the study of language or the humanities, nor disciplinary boundaries.

Profs. Jiro Nagatomi (Clemson University, South Carolina, USA) and Yasuhiko Iwasaki (Kansai University) partnered for a two-month COIL project this spring (April 1, 2019 - May 26, 2019), preparing a group of engineering students for a summer undergraduate research project culminating in a two-month study program in Japan (May 27, 2019 - July 30, 2019)

The overall goal of the COIL Plus program was to enhance students’ global learning experiences by conducting and international team project comparing and contrasting the differences in medical device commercialization processes in Japan and the U.S.

Prior to their departure, KU and CU students met virtually to get to know each other and form teams to complete weekly tasks.

Upon arriving in Japan, the four American students were given the opportunity to pursue their own mentored research projects. They also worked side-by-side with the five Japanese students at Kansai University’s world-class bioengineering research laboratory to conduct their team research. During a company tour of the Kyocera Shiga Plant on July 3rd, the three teams gave a short 20 minute presentation on their research findings. Research topics included differences in regulatory agencies, number of artificial hip joint replacements, and regulation/approval processes for medical devices.

The students toured the Kyocera plant in Shiga prefecture on Wednesday, July 3rd and presented on a variety of medical research topics.

At the end of the program, students gave an additional final presentation on the individual research they pursued during their study at KU.

Following the successful wrap-up of this program, Kansai and Clemson universities’ partnership continues to grow. A Kansai University student will next pursue a three-month long study program at Clemson University beginning in August.

※Kansai University invites JPN-COIL Consortium member university professors interested in pursuing COIL in their courses to visit IIGE, attend our training seminars/webinars, and enroll in ImmerseU to connect with potential COIL partners all over the world.
