UMAP-COIL Joint Program 2020 3rd Lecture

On 10th August, our 2020 UMAP-COIL Joint Program participants joined the 3rd Lecture on zoom, entitled “Love our ocean”, where they learned about the plastic pollution around the world.
Kate Sedwell, Co-Founder & Director of Atlantic Pacific (https://www.atlanticpacific.org.uk/), showed the crucial and shocking fact that the recycling plastic bottle, which is known to be environmental friendly, has not only been effective but actually been negatively impacting the environment. For example, tons of plastic from developed countries including Japan are exported to developing countries are not being disposed properly and polluting the ocean and the sea animals. Robin Jenkins, co-founder of my mizu ( https://www.mymizu.co/) introduced one of their projects they have been working on in order to reduce the use of plastic bottles in Japan.

The participants had a chance to discuss their ideas for saving the oceans in break out session after the lecture. They will be working on the group project in following next 2 weeks where they would be asked to identify an issue related to SDGs and suggest solutions to resolve the issue.
