The COIL+Program at California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB), one of Kansai University’s JIGE partner institutions, continued with another day of immersive learning and intercultural exchange.

During the second joint session of the Japanese Religions course, Kansai University and CSUB students participated in a collaborative workshop that challenged them to combine elements of Japanese spirituality and Shinto-inspired values with American popular culture. Working in mixed groups, students designed original characters and products that reflected cultural ideas from both countries. Through discussion and creative collaboration, participants explored how cultural beliefs and values shape the stories, symbols, and products that surround them in everyday life.

The workshop provided students with an opportunity to apply what they had learned through both the online COIL component and the in-person program, while developing creativity, cross-cultural communication skills, and a deeper understanding of different cultural perspectives.

 

 

Earlier in the day, students visited the Student Recreation Center and participated in a rock-climbing and bouldering experience. Participants challenged themselves on the facility’s climbing walls, working together to encourage one another as they tackled routes of varying difficulty. The activity not only provided a chance to experience campus life at CSUB but also highlighted the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and mutual support.

 

In the evening, students visited the Homework Club, a local community program that supports children from underserved backgrounds. Kansai University students spent time interacting with the children, introducing Japanese games, reading picture books, and engaging in various activities together.

 

Although communicating entirely in English was challenging at times, students actively sought ways to connect with the children and community members. Through these interactions, participants gained valuable insights into community engagement and cultural exchange beyond the university setting.

By combining academic learning, recreational activities, and community service experiences, the COIL+ Program continues to provide students with meaningful opportunities to deepen intercultural understanding and broaden their global perspectives.
