On September 5, the COIL+ Program in Bakersfield, California officially began.

This program is conducted in collaboration with California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB), one of Kansai University’s JIGE partner institutions. Prior to traveling to the United States, participating students engaged in online COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) activities through CSUB’s Japanese Religions course. Building on these virtual exchanges, students were finally able to meet face-to-face and participate in joint classroom sessions on campus.

During the class, Kansai University and CSUB students took part in group discussions centered on the theme of how Japanese spirituality and Shinto-inspired values are reflected in popular culture, including anime, games, festivals, and everyday customs. Through dialogue with local students, participants explored similarities and differences in cultural and religious perspectives while deepening their understanding of one another’s societies.
The in-person interaction allowed students to strengthen the relationships they had developed through COIL and experience firsthand the value of blended international learning that combines virtual exchange with physical mobility.

 

 

In the evening, students attended a CSUB women’s soccer match. Surrounded by enthusiastic students and local community members, participants experienced the excitement of American collegiate sports culture. Wearing CSUB supporter scarves distributed at the entrance, Kansai University students joined local fans in cheering on the Roadrunners and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of campus life.

 

 

Although some students are still adjusting to a new cultural and linguistic environment, many have expressed surprise at the openness and inclusiveness they have encountered in the United States. Through daily interactions with people from diverse cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, participants are gaining new perspectives and developing a deeper appreciation of diversity and intercultural understanding.

The program has already provided valuable opportunities for academic learning, cross-cultural dialogue, and personal growth, and students look forward to continuing their experiences at CSUB in the days ahead.
