21st Century Skills Program Final Presentations

The 21st Century Skills Program came to an end with a fantastic display of student presentations. The students, who have been working closely with their teams; presented to an audience of their peers and instructors. Prof Suzanne Orzech from the United States, Prof Don Bysouth and Prof Sajjad Pouromid from Kansai University, Prof Izumitani Michiko from Soka University, and Prof Keiko Ikeda Vice Director of the IIGE joined in to watch the final presentations and give their feedback.

During the past 5 weeks the students worked together during their class times and outside of their assigned lecture times to prepare their presentations. Their final collaborative project for the course revolved around the theme, “What if….?”  Each collaborative group chose a “what if” question based on one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. ALL of the 21st-Century skills taught throughout the course (teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, presentation skills, and international mindset) gave the students the tools to tackle their assignments.

The students were allowed creative control in their style of presentation, and despite having team members in different countries and timezones they were able to come up with creative solutions for delivering their presentations. Some teams used green screens to create News style video presentations, others used AI technology for voice narration, while some teams gave live presentations using powerpoint slides and video evidence. The student groups looked at a wide range of “what if” scenarios: “What if we could reset the world?” , “What if we stopped eating meat?”, “What if there was no war?” just to name a few. The creativity of the students and their ingenuity to collaborate with each other led to a successful project.

Towards the end of each presentation the students shared their comments, asked questions and commended their peers for their presentations. Although the course has come to an end many students have made lasting friendships. They have learned and shared their ideas with students from different cultures, embraced new perspectives and will leave the course with an arsenal of 21st century skills in their wheelhouse.
