UMAP-COIL Joint Program 2021 : Week 6

On September 6, 2021, students participating in the UMAP-COIL Joint Program 2021 gathered online to take part in lectures 5 & 6 of the program.

Lecture 5, titled "Learning with Indigenous Cultures through Transboundary Environmental Field Schools," welcomed Dr. Nick Stanger from Western Washington University (US). In the lecture, Dr. Stanger focused on his experience running two environmental field schools in the Salish Sea, a shared ecosystem among two countries and 65 tribes and First Nations. Using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework, these field schools seek to engage students in working collaboratively with local governments, non-governmental organizations, First Nations and Tribes, and two universities on problems within the Salish Sea. At the end of the lecture, students were given time to break into small groups to discuss how developed nations might find relevance in the SDGs when working across boarders.

Dr. Don Bysouth (Kansai University) led the sixth lecture titled "Social Justice in the Context of COVID-19," in which he touched on how social justice initiatives relating to pandemic impacts can be understood with reference to several SDGs: 1 (No Poverty), 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).

Students will meet again next week to give group presentations on their joint research projects. To learn more about the program, please visit: https://kuiige.wixsite.com/umapcoil/2021-online-program
