We are pleased to announce that applications are now OPEN for our UMAP-COIL Joint Program 2021!

Program Overview

The toll of the COVID-19 pandemic on international education around the world has been unquestionably devastating. In the past year countless physical mobility programs were brought to a halt, and strict containment measures moved many university classes online across the globe. While campuses reopen their gates to students and vaccines provide hope for the return to safe international travel, it is likely that the boundless potential for online education that unfolded in the midst of this crisis will lead to the standardized adoption of a wide range of hybrid on-site and off-site learning options in the future. As we continue to wait for borders to open safely, we must explore the potential of new and innovative solutions to providing international experiences for our students.

Although the temporary stop to study abroad programs has severely limited students’ overseas educational opportunities, HEIs must continue the important work of educating students in the necessary intercultural competencies to become responsible global citizens. It can be strongly argued that these skills are more necessary now than ever in this climate of global crisis, as how we work together to shape the landscape of the post-pandemic world is so critical to determining the future.

It is against this backdrop that Kansai University IIGE (Institute for Innovative Global Education), in conjunction with UMAP (University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific), would like to propose the third annual UMAP-COIL Joint Program be conducted online again in 2021. First conducted in 2019, the UMAP-COIL Joint Honors Program combined an online component with a physical study abroad in Japan. In 2020, the program was moved online and received a highly enthusiastic response from a record number of applicants all over the world. This 2021 program will continue to provide ample opportunities for students to gain international experience in an enriched virtual format.

IIGE/Kansai University has been promoting COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) as an additional teaching and learning practice in international education since 2014. With our knowledge and experience to promote virtual exchange among students from different backgrounds, we are confident in generating an online course this summer. The tentative details of the proposed program will follow below.

“Striving for global citizenry competence in the VUCA world”

- Culture, economics, SDGs, international affairs

- Diversity and inclusion

- Business innovation for a sustainable society

This program is designed to give students opportunities to consider global citizenship with regard to key contemporary social issues in international settings, taking international and domestic perspectives. Students will examine a range of broad themes relating to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including topics on foreign policy, international affairs, trade and finance, and defense and security. In addition, we will explore more specific areas of contemporary interest, for example aspects of health and wellbeing, international approaches to education, and business innovation and development. The course is designed to be responsive to topical and immediate global concerns and will draw upon themes and materials as they develop.
