Connected through COIL, Creating Together: Japanese and Spanish Students Take on Sustainable Fashion

One of the most rewarding moments in COIL is seeing online collaboration become something tangible. This week, students from Japan and Spain showcased the outcomes of their collaborative learning through a Sustainable Fashion Show at Chiba University.

Working across borders through a combination of online collaboration and onsite activities, they transformed upcycled yukata into new fashion creations—and proudly presented them on the runway.

Watching students confidently showcase their work reminded me that international collaboration is not simply about connecting classrooms. It is about co-creating, solving problems together, and making ideas visible through authentic experiences.Congratulations to all the students and faculty members who made this possible!

This marks the halfway point of the project. The next chapter now begins at Kansai University, where students will continue developing their ideas and collaborations. Looking forward to seeing how these international partnerships continue to grow—and how sustainability, creativity, and intercultural learning come together in meaningful ways.
