information2026/10/20 Belgian Day Celebrates the 160th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Belgium

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, Belgian Day was held at Kansai University’s Senriyama Campus. The event was jointly organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Japan and the Kansai University European Center, based at KU Leuven in Belgium, to commemorate the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Belgium and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Kansai University European Center.
Blessed with clear autumn weather, the event welcomed a large number of visitors. Through a series of programs, including a lecture, a film screening, and a study abroad fair, participants had a valuable opportunity to learn about Belgian culture and society, as well as initiatives in Europe.

As part of the Seminar on Europe, H.E. Mr. Antoine Evrard, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Belgium to Japan, delivered a lecture entitled “Gender Equality: Why and How? Belgian Experience.” The lecture explored the European Union’s gender equality policies and Belgium’s social and legal frameworks. It also provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on how to build a society that respects diversity and inclusivity through comparisons between Belgium and Japan.

A screening of the Belgian film L’Employée du mois was also held at the KU Symphony Hall. With Japanese subtitles, the screening offered participants an opportunity to experience Belgian cinema and gain a deeper appreciation of the country’s film culture.
In addition, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Japan hosted a consultation booth at the Kansai University International Fair: Connecting with the World, held on the same day. Visitors were able to obtain information about studying in Belgium and living there, helping to deepen their understanding of and interest in the country.
Marking the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Belgium, Belgian Day provided a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the longstanding ties between the two countries and foster greater understanding of Belgian society and culture, as well as European initiatives.

As the Kansai University European Center celebrates its 20th anniversary, it will continue to promote awareness and understanding of Europe and further strengthen international research and educational exchange.
