For International Students Wishing to Study at Graduate Schools of Kansai University

Kansai University has 4 campuses (Senriyama, Takatsuki, Takatsuki Muse and Sakai) in Osaka, a prefecture with a rich history and tradition.
The total number of students enrolled in Kansai University’s 13 graduate schools (law, letters, economics, commerce, sociology, informatics, science and engineering, foreign language education and research, psychology, safety sciences, East Asian cultures, governance and health and well-being), and three professional graduate schools (law, accountancy and professional clinical psychology) is approximately 1,800, approximately 400 of whom are international students.
The number of international students studying at Kansai University is increasing year by year. We are producing many excellent talents who have studied Japanese culture and have completed academic programs at our university. And they are playing important role worldwide.
At graduate schools of Kansai University, two systems are available: the system for “regular international students,” who take regular courses in order to earn degrees; and the system for “foreign research students,” who can receive research instruction from instructors for one year, in principle. International Students and Foreign Research Students

International Students

“International students” are regular students of graduate schools of Kansai University. If such a student has studied for the period designated by their graduate school, has earned the designated number or more of credits, has received necessary research instruction, and then has passed their thesis review and examinations, a master’s degree for a Master’s Degree Program, or a Ph.D degree for a Ph.D Degree Program will be awarded.
If you want to study as a international student, you need to take and pass the entrance examination (document screening, paper examination, and oral examination) for the graduate school of your choice.

Foreign Research Students

“Foreign research students” are not regular students of graduate schools of Kansai University. However, such students can attend lectures of a few subjects provided by the graduate school of their choice. Foreign research students are accepted twice a year: April and September.
Foreign research students can receive instruction at their graduate schools for one year, in principle. (In some cases, the period can be extended, depending on approval by their instructors and graduate schools.)
Foreign research students can receive benefits equivalent to those offered to regular students of Kansai University’s master’s program, such as using the university’s libraries and receiving support to copy research documents. However, the use of research facilities is allowed, only if it will not hinder research activities by regular students of graduate schools of Kansai University.
If you want to receive instruction as a foreign research student, you need to take and pass the screening (document selection and oral examination) of the graduate school of your choice.
If you have already been selected as a recipient of a Japanese government scholarship or an equivalent scholarship, you may be exempted from an oral examination.

Concurrent Admission Application

It is possible to apply for “International Students Entrance Examination(Master Degree Program)” and “Foreign Research Students Selection Examination” at the same time.

Application Procedure

Eligibility and admissions requirements for “International Students Entrance Examination(Master Degree Program)” and “Foreign Research Students Selection Examination” are different and require separate application documents. If you would like to apply for “International Students Entrance Examination(Master Degree Program)” and “Foreign Research Students Selection Examination” simultaneously, please refer to the Application Guidelines for both for full details.

If you wish to apply for “International Students Entrance Examination(Master Degree Program)” and “Foreign Research Students Selection Examination” simultaneously:

Application Fee and Selection Fee You will only be responsible for paying the Application Fee (35,000 JPY) and will be exempt from the Selection Fee (14,000 JPY).
Submission of application documents Please submit both sets of application documents in the same envelope.
Screening Method

Applicants for “International Students Entrance Examination(Master Degree Program)” must undergo the document screening, take both a written and oral examination. Document selection and an oral examination is required for the applicants for “Foreign Research Students Selection Examination”. If you wish to apply for both simultaneously, an oral examination will be conducted only once during screening.

Japanese Proficiency

At graduate schools of Kansai University, almost all the lectures for international students and foreign research students are provided in Japanese. In this regard, you need not only general Japanese proficiency, which you may have acquired for general purposes, but also academic Japanese proficiency necessary to study at graduate school regardless of academic field, and Japanese proficiency needed in each academic field.

Support for Obtaining Visa

Upon request, Kansai University provides support for those living overseas to obtain a visa in order to visit Japan for the purpose of taking an entrance examination for Kansai University and enrolling in the university.

Support for Those Visiting Japan to Take Examination

When going to Japan for the examination, the type of visa is irrelevant. Please apply the visa by yourself.
We support the following (1) and (2) to those who are not be issued a short-term stay visa.

(1) Issuing Examination Permission Form

After paying application fee (selection fee) and submitting all the necessary documents to apply for the examination, if it is impossible to you to be issued a short-term stay visa by Examination Ticket, contact us and we will issue and send the Examination Permission Form to you.

(2) Issuing Necessary Documents to Obtain Short-Term Commercial Visa

If it is difficult to obtain a visa with the above (1) Examination Permission Form, we will issue necessary documents for you to obtain a Short-Term Commercial Visa. If you request and contact us in advance, we will issue and send necessary documents, after you have paid your application fee (selection fee) and have submitted all the necessary documents to apply for your examination, as well as all the necessary documents designated separately to obtain a Short-Term Commercial Visa.

(Necessary Documents Designated)

  • Written pledge (form designated by Kansai University)
  • Stay schedule (form designated by Kansai University)
  • Bank balance certificate for the payer of the educational fees
  • Employment certificate and income certificate for the payer of the educational fees
  • If the payer of the educational fees is not the applicant for an examination, a public certificate to indicate the relationship between the payer and the applicant is necessary.

  • Letter of Reason for Invitation
  • Schedule of Stay
  • Certificate of Employment of the International Director of Kansai University
  • Note 1:
    Before proceeding to acquire the " Short-Term Commercial Visa ", please be sure to check with the Japanese  embassy, consulate general or other relevant organization beforehand about whether it is possible to obtain a visa by the above 3 documents in your area. If there are other necessary documents, please contact us as soon as possible.
  • Note 2:
    If it is difficult to obtain a visa with an examination permission form, Kansai University will issue necessary documents for you to obtain a Short-Term Commercial Visa, which is the visa type we only support to Please note that we offer no support to obtain other types of visa.
  • Note 3:
    The application for a Short-Term Commercial Visa is examined by the relevant Japanese embassy/consulate general. Please note that Kansai University does not guarantee that you can obtain such a visa.
Support for Those Visiting Japan to Enroll in Kansai University and
Wishing to Obtain College Student Visa

Upon request, if you live in a foreign country and are scheduled to enroll in a graduate school of Kansai University, we will provide the support to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status, which is necessary to obtain a College Student Visa.
While accessing to the web entry system, there is a column asking whether you are going to reply for a Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status or not. Please choose yes if you are going to take the examination and need the support.

Those Taking the October Examination or December Examination

We will send documents regarding application for a Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status by proxy, along with a letter of acceptance.

Those Taking July Examination or February Examination

The schedule is too tight to send you the documents after the examination result announced, so we will send the documents regarding application for a Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status by proxy, along with a letter of acceptance before the examination result announcement.

    This support is for those living overseas. Please note that we do not make applications on behalf of those living in Japan.
  • Note 2:
    The application for a Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status is examined by the Immigration Bureau. Please note that Kansai University does not guarantee that you can obtain such a certificate.
