Globalisation has created many opportunities for Japanese companies. As the world becomes more interconnected, Japanese companies have the opportunity to sell their products and services to more people around the world. However, globalisation also creates challenges. The world is changing at a fast pace, so companies need to hire workers who can continually adapt to complexity and uncertainty. Companies need workers who can communicate with people from other cultures. They need workers who have open minds and critical thinking skills. In other words, companies need workers who can actively find solutions to problems in this rapidly changing world. Since the late 80s, the Japanese government has made steps to try to improve education to develop students who have the skills to thrive in this global society. However, my PhD research and the research of others indicate that Japanese secondary schools have been slow to adapt. As a result, to fill this demand for globally responsive workers, Japanese companies are hiring many foreign students rather than Japanese graduates.

Japanese companies have first class services and products; however, they can improve their international competitiveness through improving their marketing strategies. My current research and my seminar focus on ways to improve various aspects of marketing. Students in my seminar will develop their skills at market research, negotiation and persuasion, and audiovisual communication. They will write a report based on the analysis of the marketing strategies of international companies and they will also create their own marketing campaign (including a video commercial).
