Kansai students volunteer more than 400 hours through community service projects
This March, just as the world changed from COVID-19, the 2020 cohort of students from Kansai University in Japan arrived at KU for a nine-month study abroad program. Because of the pandemic, International Short Programs staff quickly realized that the six-month internships the students normally participated in just wouldn't be possible this year. But there was a definite need for volunteers to help social service organizations meet the needs of the community, so ISP adjusted the internship program.

First, the students learned about poverty and food insecurity in the US. Then ISP reached out to local service organizations to see what Kansai students could do to help and, in pairs or small groups, Kansai students were able to help numerous organizations. They boxed up or handed out food at Just Food. They helped distribute food boxes at Catholic Charities and at mobile food pantries for the Ballard Center and Harvester's International. They worked on a Habitat for Humanity house build and helped receive and organize stock in the Habitat ReStore. Students also sorted clothing donations for the Outreach to First Nations organization, assisted the Ballard Center in preparations for their Rev It Up! fundraising event, and helped add compost to the Sunrise Community Garden.

During a very unusual study abroad experience in an unprecedented year, these Kansai students embraced opportunities to help, reach out, and meet community members. All told, when the 12 Kansai students leave KU in December, they will have collectively donated more than 400 hours towards helping local service organizations. The ISP team is incredibly proud of them.
