Welcome to the Graduate School of Foreign Language Education and Research!

Kansai University's Graduate School of Foreign Language Education and Research was established in April 2002 as the first institution in Japan to have "Foreign Language Education and Research" as part of its name. It is a large graduate school, with 25 students in the master's program and 8 students in the doctoral program each year. As of 2022, which was the 20th anniversary of its establishment, the School has produced 447 master's degree holders and 36 doctoral degree holders.

Cross the boundaries

A unique feature of the program is that it is based on language education research, but allows students to study the theories and practices specific to three particular areas: foreign language education, intercultural communication, and interpreting/translation. Another feature of this program is the diversity of languages offered, which include English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and German. An educational environment that allows students to expand their research interests beyond the normal boundaries to related fields of research and languages provides an opportunity for them to encounter different perspectives and create new possibilities for further study.

Soar into the world!

To mark the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the Graduate School has created an "online program" that comes into effect from the beginning of the 2023 academic year. This program allows students from anywhere within Japan to enroll in the master's program, and from anywhere in the world to enroll in the doctoral program! We hope that all of you who have been hesitant to enter graduate school due to the challenges of distance and time will make the most of this opportunity and now take the first step forward. As we have all witnessed in the years since the start of the pandemic, academic conferences and many other academic exchanges have been rapidly shifting online. The mission of our Graduate School is to contribute to the creation of a borderless research environment in which students can seek learning opportunities anywhere in the world.

Learning has no expiration date

Our graduate students come from very diverse backgrounds and each have had their own unique experiences. New university graduates, international students, in-service teachers, and other working professionals all study together, so never think you are too old or you do not have enough time. There is no time limit for learning. If you have a strong desire to study, please do not hesitate to apply!
