CurriculumOur Aim

The Faculty of Foreign Language Studies aims to train "foreign language professionals." That is, to develop human resources who have a global perspective and sensitivity to cross-cultural diversity, and who can actively contribute to society by making full use of their extensive foreign language communication skills.

Foreign Languages Taught in the Faculty

Students in our faculty can major in English or Chinese (or in some cases Japanese*), studying to attain a high level of proficiency in the use of their major language. They can also choose to minor in one of the following languages: German, French, Spanish, Russian, Korean, Chinese (for English majors), or English (for Chinese majors), meaning many of our students are trilingual by the time they graduate―being able to use Japanese, as well as their major and minor foreign languages.

Our Five Specialized Programs

Our faculty offers five specialized programs of study: Foreign Language/Communication Education, International and Regional Cooperation, Area Studies, Intercultural Communication, and Interpreting and Translation. These five programs aim to provide students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of language-related matters in the real world. Through participating in these programs, our students are able to enhance their knowledge and skills in foreign languages so that they can actively contribute to various fields both nationally and internationally after graduation.

Language Teacher Training (English/Chinese/Japanese as a Foreign Language)

Students who want to pursue a language teaching profession in public high schools in Japan can acquire the Japanese Ministry-Accredited High School Teacher's License (Grade 1 Junior High School Teacher's License and Grade 1 Senior High School Teacher's License [English or Chinese]). Such students take designated courses under the Kansai University Teacher Training Program to obtain the required number of credits. Of course, many of the credits earned in the Teacher Training Program also count toward the number of credits required for graduation from our Faculty.
Students who are interested in teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) can earn a JFL Teacher Certificate by taking the requisite courses to complete our Japanese Language Teacher Training Program.
