KANSAI UNIVERSITY

Graduate School of Societal Safety Sciences

The Graduate School of Safety Science Masters Course was established in April of 2010. To complement this, a doctoral course was created from 2012 to provide a continuum of education for the first group of graduates from the master's course. Experiencing integrated studies in disaster prevention and reduction, graduates from the program will be qualified to work at the frontline in the business of making society safer and more secure for the future. In order to respond to this huge task, the Graduate School of Societal Safety Sciences will analyze disaster prevention and reduction from the perspectives of numerous academic disciplines including law, political science, economics and management, sociology, psychology, science, informatics, engineering, and social medicine. Our objective is to move ahead with highly developed education and research through procuring and systemizing all aspects of safety knowledge.

The school name that is “Safety Science” had been used in several overseas universities before the establishment of Kansai University’s Graduate School of safety science. Although the school name of “Safety Science” helps applicants or others with understanding what safety science is, “Safety Science” evokes traditional ideas on safety science that is usually based on safety engineering. As mentioned above, the scope of research at our Graduate School is broader than safety engineering, in other words, safety engineering is a part of our scope of research. To reflect the features of our Graduate School, we have changed our school name from Safety Science to Societal Safety Sciences in April 2016.
