A survey report on the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake

On and after April 14, 2016, earthquakes have occurred intermittently in the Kyushu region, centered in Kumamoto Prefecture and Oita Prefecture (2016 Kumamoto Earthquake). The earthquakes on seismic intensity class 7 of the Japan Meteorological Agency occurred on the 14th and the 16th, and numerous large-scale aftershocks continued thereafter. Due to these earthquakes, not only direct damage such as large-scale landslides in the Aso region and the collapse of the Ishigaki (stonewall) of the Kumamoto castle arose, but damage caused by the prolonged disaster have also occurred including victims who died due to so-called economy class syndrome of residents who were forced to live in their cars.
After the Kumamoto Earthquake occurred, the Faculty of Societal Safety Sciences visited the area to conduct information gathering and surveys. Furthermore, since we have secured the Kansai University emergency support expenses budget for education and research, we will conduct joint research on the Kumamoto Earthquake. We give reports on the survey results on this page.
