 Societal safety sciences is a new academic subject that can be defined as the concept of interdisciplinary integration of research in various specialized fields for the purpose of preventing and suppressing accidents and disasters, providing relief / aid to victims, and restoring / reconstructing affected areas, with an aim to establish safety and security. This book aims for the realization of a safe and secure society by looking inside of human beings, society, and nature from the viewpoint of safety and security, by analyzing the problems existing there, and by providing solutions. Societal Safety Sciences Study Series

 The Faculty of Societal Safety Sciences has published one specialized book every year since 2012, in order to disclose the latest research results on societal safety sciences to the public. This is designed to be a societal safety sciences study series and we had planned to publish six volumes in total until 2017, at a pace of one book per year. For each book, writing fields are assigned to the faculty staff members in each specialized department. We would be happy if readers, through the publications, would be able to come into contact with a part of the wide and deep research field that the Faculty of Societal Safety Sciences is dealing with.

 Five years have passed since the occurrence of the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, reconstruction is still ongoing, and there are still many challenges remaining in the field. Based on the "Examination of the Great East Japan Earthquake" (published in February 2012) written on the basis of field surveys conducted immediately after the earthquake by the Faculty members, this book summarizes the results of joint surveys that are still ongoing. Based on the lessons learned from comprehensively analyzing / elucidating various problems in the reconstruction process, they are searching for issues and prospects in disaster prevention / disaster reduction / disaster contraction in the huge complex disasters that are expected to occur in the future, such as the Nankai Trough Massive Earthquake and the earthquake expected to hit the capital area.  In modern society, not only are there various risks of natural disasters such as earthquakes / tsunamis, there are also social disasters such as accidents and information security problems.  The subjects of research / education of the Faculty of Societal Safety Sciences can be broadly divided into natural disaster problems and social disaster problems. Volume 2, which was published in March 2013, was the research book dealing mainly with social disaster problems. On the other hand, in this volume, natural disaster problems are mainly dealt with. As in the previous two volumes, all authors of this volume are the staff members in the Faculty or staff members who are scheduled to take office in April 2014. Most of them have been involved in research on disaster prevention / disaster prevention sites, and are conducting current analysis and policy recommendations with a practical and interdisciplinary approach.
