Celebrating the Centennial of the University’s PromotionKeiji SHIBAI, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Kansai University

A century ago, on June 5, 1922, Kansai University (KU) came into existence. Although having called itself Kansai University since 1905, through the University Ordinance, KU officially achieved University Status. The request to be promoted to an official university was finally approved after the school raised sufficient capital, opened a new campus in Senriyama, Suita City, and recruited outstanding professors for the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Business and Commerce.
Juntaro YAMAOKA was the driving force behind these efforts. YAMAOKA was a prominent figure in the business world who had served as the president of Osaka Chamber of Commerce. Once he became the leader of KU, he poured his energy into soliciting donations for University Status, selecting and building the Senriyama Campus, and most importantly, espousing the idea of GAKU-NO-JITSUGE (Harmony between Academia & Society), KU’s motto.
The motto GAKU-NO-JITSUGE, which YAMAOKA advocated, means “Harmony between Academia & Society, and between Theory and Practice.” In addition to these values, “Cultivation of a Global Spirit,” “Focus on Foreign Language Learning,” and “Physical Education” have since become the four principles supporting KU’s identity. These four pillars are not only the guidelines for the education that KU tries to provide but also depicts the type of students we would like to nurture through the education we offer. They are more than simple educational guidelines and targets. They clearly indicate what KU is and form the reason and basis for our existence.
The centenary of University Status is not simply counting the number of years. It is important to take this opportunity to reflect and recognize the significance of KU, when it started on its journey as a university, a new concept in the Taisho period (1912–1926). This advancement was made under the leadership of YAMAOKA, our predecessor who brought new life to KU.
To celebrate KU’s centenary, on June 5, we will hold a commemorative ceremony and symposium, but we are also planning and preparing various types of commemorative events over the coming year, including the GAKU-NO-JITSUGE Course, Yamaoka Juku, a commemorative festival organized by the Alumni & Alumnae Association, a commemorative exhibition, and the publication of a commemorative booklet. These events and projects will offer an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of our University Status.
These events are not only for current KU faculty, staff, and students, but also all those who are connected to our university, such as the Alumni & Alumnae Association and Parents' Association. I truly hope this year is a significant one for all.

Continually Taking on New Challenges and Transforming OneselfYutaka MAEDA, President

On June 5, 2022, Kansai University (KU) will celebrate its centenary for not only the acquisition of University Status but also the establishment of the University motto, GAKU-NO-JITSUGE (Harmony between Academia & Society), and university song, and the opening of Senriyama Campus as well.
Many of our predecessors, including Juntaro YAMAOKA, exerted themselves with conviction to have the school promoted to a university. I deeply appreciate their efforts because we have the present-day KU as a result of their work.
Over the past century, KU has been created on a foundation built through the support of our numerous graduates, the efforts of our predecessors to reinforce the education and research activities of KU and the university’s bonds with society, and the work of numerous parties related to the university.
Society is entering a difficult era. Japan is also facing numerous serious issues, such as an aging society with fewer children, greater disparities within society, and changes in the industrial structure. If one looks beyond Japan, the world is confronting a wide range of problems, some of which are represented in the SDGs. To solve these problems, it is extremely important to educate students who not only possess advanced knowledge and skills but also can respect each other and work together by sharing their knowledge.
GAKU-NO-JITSUGE truly expresses the idea of Harmony between Academia & Society, and between Theory & Practice. It is as if YAMAOKA could foresee the coming changes and challenges to society. It was and is still expected that a university education would only be possible through mutual interaction with a changing society.
We have been entrusted with what will be created over the next century. At a time of disorder and uncertainty, the question for KU is, what should we do for the next generation? In order to build a foundation for new growth and development in a changing society, it is important to take on new challenges and continually transform oneself. We must continue to change in response to the feedback we receive from society, by questioning the viewpoints we adopt. This upward spiral is the GAKU-NO-JITSUGE (Harmony between Academia & Society) in our time.
The next generation will create their own KU and will be responsible for it. KU will be continually transformed over time, as new generations confidently respond to the challenges ahead.
With appreciation to our predecessors and hope for the next generation, I congratulate KU on its past and wish the best for its future on this centennial jubilee.
