Memorial Event for the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and Disaster Prevention Activities

On January 16 and 17, many people gathered at Sannomiya East Park in Kobe to attend a memorial event marking the 31st anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

Among the participants was Mr. Vladimir Guzmán, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Sciences, Kansai University. On January 17, he observed lanterns bearing messages of remembrance and joined a moment of silent prayer at 5:46 a.m., the exact time the earthquake occurred.

The memorial event aimed not only to honor the victims of the earthquake that struck Kobe on January 17, 1995, but also to pass on disaster-prevention lessons and the importance of social bonds to younger generations, helping to foster a resilient society.

During the event, international university students presented articles and materials on disaster prevention, based on knowledge gained in Japan, conditions in their home countries, and lessons learned from the Kobe earthquake. Mr. Guzmán participated in this exhibition as part of the memorial activities, sharing disaster-prevention perspectives from Japan and the Dominican Republic, his home country. Together with other participants, he introduced different approaches to strengthening community ties and improving resilience against future disasters.

1月16日と17日、神戸市の東遊園地において、阪神・淡路大震災から31年を迎える追悼行事が開催され、多くの人々が集まりました。
本行事には、社会安全研究科博士後期課程に在籍するウラジミール・エンリケ・グスマン・ハビエル氏も参加しました。1月17日には、震災が発生した午前5時46分の時刻に合わせ、追悼のメッセージが書かれた灯籠を見つめ、黙とうに参加しました。

この追悼行事は、1995年1月17日に神戸を襲った阪神・淡路大震災の犠牲者を悼むだけでなく、防災の教訓や人と人とのつながりの大切さを次世代へ伝え、災害に強い社会を築くことを目的として行われました。

行事期間中には、留学生による防災に関する展示も行われ、日本で学んだ知識や母国の状況、そして阪神・淡路大震災から得られた教訓をもとに、記事や資料が紹介されました。グズマン氏も追悼行事の一環としてこの展示に参加し、日本と母国ドミニカ共和国の防災の視点を共有しました。他の参加者とともに、地域のつながりを強化し、将来の災害へのレジリエンスを高めるための多様な取り組みについて紹介しました。
