Ph.D student: Mr. Vladimir Enrique Guzmán Javier held a lecture in Kyoto

On Saturday, June 28, a multicultural audience of 71 participants from 11 countries gathered at the kokoka to attend the lecture: "What is Common Knowledge about Disasters? Thinking Again by Comparing Japan with Other Countries."

The presentation was co-led by Mr. Vladimir Enrique Guzmán Javier, a civil engineer and doctoral student at the Graduate School of Societal Safety Sciences, Kansai University, and Ms. Rieko Ueda, a disaster prevention specialist and member of Team Disaster Prevention OTOKUNI.

The lecture focused on reflecting critically on what is often assumed to be "common knowledge" about disasters by comparing Japanese practices and perspectives with those from other countries, particularly the Dominican Republic.

During the session, Mr. Guzmán introduced common natural disasters in the Dominican Republic, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, supported with impactful images and examples. These photos included damaged structures, urban flooding, and housing vulnerabilities. He also introduced traditional disaster management approaches used in the Caribbean, including some community-level responses.

The event emphasized how disaster-related knowledge is shaped by cultural and historical experience, and how his time in Japan has transformed his understanding of disaster resilience.

This presentation encouraged a valuable exchange of ideas and highlighted the importance of cross-cultural learning in disaster prevention.

6月28日（土）、京都市国際交流会館（kokoka）にて、「災害の常識とは？外国と日本の比較から」と題した講演会が開催され、11か国から71名の多様な参加者が集まりました。

この講演は、本研究科博士課程後期課程に在籍する土木技術者のウラジミール・エンリケ・グスマン・ハビエル氏と、チーム防災OTOKUNI所属の防災士、植田利江子氏の2名で行われました。

講演では、災害に関する「共通認識」とされているものを批判的に見つめ直し、日本と他国、特にドミニカ共和国との比較を通してその違いを考えることに焦点が当てられました。

グスマン氏は、ドミニカ共和国で頻発する自然災害（ハリケーンや地震など）について、被害を受けた建物、都市型水害、脆弱な住宅などのインパクトのある写真や具体例を用いて紹介しました。また、カリブ地域における伝統的な防災対策や、地域レベルの対応も取り上げられました。

この講演では、災害に関する知識が文化的・歴史的な経験によって形作られていること、そして日本での生活がグスマン氏の防災への理解をどのように変えたかについても紹介されました。

今回の講演は、参加者同士の貴重な意見交換を促し、異文化間の学びが防災において、いかに重要であるかを改めて示す機会となりました。
