東西学術研究所の概要（沿革） Overview

昭和26年3月、藤澤桓夫氏（小説家）の御意志と石濱純太郎教授の尽力によって「泊園書院」の蔵書約二万余冊と「極東国際軍事裁判資料」が関西大学に寄贈されたことを契機として、東西学術研究所が設立された。「泊園書院」は、江戸時代末期［文政8（1825）年］に讃岐（現在の香川県）の儒者藤澤東畡先生が大阪の淡路町で徂徠学を講じるために開かれた私塾で、藤澤南岳、藤澤黄鵠、藤澤黄坡先生と四代にわたり大阪の町人・市民の文化と教養を高めるために営まれた漢学塾であった。
同年4月「東西両洋文化の学術研究、殊に比較研究を行い世界文化の融合に貢献する」という目標を高らかに掲げて、関西大学における本格的な研究所の第1号として設立され、現在、千里山キャンパスの児島惟謙館2階にある。
そして、当研究所はアジア研究に軸足を置きながら、広く世界を視野に入れた比較研究を展開してきた。現在、上記の設立理念を踏まえて、7研究班体制をとって幅広い研究活動を展開している。
東西学術研究所は、①研究、調査及びその成果の発表、②研究会・講演会・シンポジウム等の開催、③研究高度化推進事業、④外国人研究者の受け入れ等の活動を行っている。研究成果は「東西学術研究所紀要」（2022年、第55輯を刊行）に所載される。その他に、各研究者の研究成果を集大成した研究叢刊（同69冊）をはじめ、訳注シリーズ（同21冊）、資料集刊（同92冊）、索引シリーズ（同1冊）、国際共同研究シリーズ（同10冊）、研究叢書（同17冊）と、膨大な研究成果が蓄積されてきた。研究活動としては、研究例会（年10回程度）、およびシンポジウムの開催（不定期）を行っている。2007年にはグローバルCOEプログラムに採択され、5年間のプログラム終了後も研究所内に「関西大学文化交渉学研究拠点」が設置されている。
関西大学が所蔵する東アジア文化研究のための豊富なリソースを集中的にデジタル化し、開かれたアーカイヴズを構築することを目的に、文部科学省よりアジア文化研究センターが2011年5月に5カ年の計画で選定され2016年3月をもってプロジェクトを終了した。今回のプロジェクトも数々の研究成果を収め、国内外において高い評価を得た。2017年度には私立大学研究ブランディング事業に採択され、「関西大学アジア・オープン・リサーチセンター（KU-ORCAS）」が設立された。
若手研究者の養成という観点から、「準研究員制度」を設けて大学院生の研究能力の向上に資するとともに、「非常勤研究員制度」を設けて学籍を離れてより高度の研究活動を展開している若手研究者を研究組織に積極的に組み入れて日本学術振興会科学研究費にも積極的に応募しながら研究の一層の展開を促していく体制を整えつつある。その他に、上記の泊園書院を顕彰するために設けられた泊園記念会は、毎年10月頃に「泊園記念講座」を開催しており、既に62回を重ねている。

In March 1951, with the willingness of Mr. Takeo Fujisawa (a novelist) and the efforts of Professor Juntaro Ishihama, more than 20,000 books of Hakuen Shoin Collections and “Far East International Military Tribunal materials” were donated to Kansai University. This occasion let to the establishment of the Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies. The Hakuen Shoin was a private school that was opened by Mr. Tougai Fujisawa, a Confucian Professor from Sanuki (present-day Kagawa Prefecture), in Awajimachi, Osaka at the end of Edo period (1825). It was a private school that was established for the purpose of enhancing the culture and education of the townspeople and citizens in Osaka. It was run by four generations of Fujisawa family, including Mr. Nangaku Fujisawa, Mr. Koukoku Fujisawa, and Mr. Kouha Fujisawa.
In April of the same year, with the lofty goal of "conducting academic research, particularly comparative studies, on both Eastern and Western cultures and contributing to the integration of world cultures," the Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies was established as the first full-fledged research institute at Kansai University. It is currently located on the second floor of KOJIMA KOREKATA-KAN on the Senriyama Campus.

Since its establishment, the Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies has conducted comparative research with a broad global perspective, focusing on Asian studies. Currently, based on the founding principles mentioned above, it operates seven divisions and carries out a wide range of research activites.
The Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies carries out in the following activities: (1) research, investigation, and publication of results, (2) organization research meetings, lectures, symposiums, etc., (3) promotion of advanced of research initiatives, (4) hosting visiting foreign researchers, and more. The research results are published in the annual Bulletin of the Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies at Kansai University (the 55th issue was published in 2022). In addition, a vast amount of research achievements has been accumulated, including a research series that compiles the research results of individual researchers (69 volumes), translation and annotation series (21 volumes), collection of documentary materials (92 volumes), index series (1 volume), international joint research series (10 volumes), and research monographs (17 volumes). As part of research activities, research seminars (about 10 times a year) and symposiums (irregular) are held. In 2007, it was selected as a Global COE program, and even after five-year program ended, Kansai University Institute for Cultural Interaction Studies was established within the institute.
With the aim of concentrating and digitizing the abundant resources for East Asian cultural research held by Kansai University and constructing an open archive, the Center for the Studies of Asian Cultures was selected for a five-year plan in May 2011 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the project was completed in March 2016. This project also achieved numerous research results and received high evaluations both domestically and internationally. In the fiscal year 2017, it was selected for the Private University Research Branding Project, and the Kansai University Open Research Center for Asian Studies (KU-ORCAS) was established.
From the perspective of cultivating young researchers, the institute has established the "Research Associate System" to contribute to the improvement of research abilities of graduate students, and actively incorporates young researchers who engage in advanced research activities outside their student status through the "Part-time Research Associate System." They actively apply for grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science while establishing a system to promote further development of research. Furthermore, the Hakuen Memorial Society, established to honor the aforementioned Hakuen Shoin, holds the "Hakuen Memorial Lectures" every October, which has already been held for the 62nd time.
