本書は、明治初期の進歩的な思想家で自由民権を主張した中江兆民が、ルソーの『社会契約論』を漢文に訳、解した『民約訳解』の英訳である。明治時代の先覚者たちの日本文化史上におけるユニークさは、その多くが漢学(儒教的徳育)の深い教養を持ち、その基礎の上に西欧の近代思想を導入したことである。当然、その受容の過程において葛藤が生じ、変化が起こる。その観点から、兆民自身が付した本書の「解」は、意義深く、特筆すべきものであろう。
