Notice on the Thorough Implementation of Animal and Plant Quarantine Measures during Summer Break

Regarding the above matter, we have received a request from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) to share the following information.

To prevent the spread of plant pests and animal infectious diseases, Japan strictly regulates the importation of fruits, vegetables, meat, and meat products from overseas.

Even for items that are not prohibited, bringing fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and similar agricultural products into Japan requires a phytosanitary certificate issued by the government authority of the exporting country.

The importation of meat and meat products is prohibited. There are no exceptions, even for airline meals, souvenirs, or small quantities.

Please note that illegal importation may result in penalties, including imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to JPY 3 million (up to JPY 50 million for corporations).
