Expert’s Eyes

People will not die due to an earthquake itself, but will be killed due to collapse of “weak” structures when an earthquake occurs.
It may sounds as a bit extreme. But there is no doubt that the basis of safety is the durability of structures. Therefore, appropriate design of new strucures, and diagnosis of existing structures are necessary. Everything to prevent the earthquake induced damage to various kind of structures for our daily life, such as houses, bridges, tunnels, harbors, telephone poles, etc., is the target of “Seismic engineering".

Remarkable File

・Award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers for the development of “Chart-system for seismic diagnosis for various type of coastal structures”. ・Award from the Ports and Harbours Association of Japan for publication of the picture books “What’s Derolin“ (English version) and “Yoshio-kun to Derolin” (Japanese version) for disaster mitigation education. ・The picture book “What’s Derolin” for disaster prevention education was translated to Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Persian, and Italian by researchers in earthquake engineering. ・Wrote seismic design examples to the ISO technical report: ISO/TR12930. ・Participating in improving the functions of the liquefaction analysis program FLIP used in seismic design based on performance, as well as its dissemination.
