Expert’s Eyes

I study extreme rainfall events that trigger flash floods and landslides in river basins. Recently, severe disasters have occurred, such as the 2014 Hiroshima, 2017 Northern Kyushu, 2018 Western Japan, 2020 Kumagawa, and 2024 Noto Peninsula heavy rainfall events. My research focuses on estimating maximum precipitation in river basins based on meteorological mechanisms.
Specifically, I ask: What is the worst hazard scenario for river basins? What conditions play key roles in such scenarios? To explore these questions, I analyze extreme rainfall mechanisms using weather radar, satellite data, and weather simulations. I also study past rainfall events to enhance disaster preparedness.
