Japanese Cultural Experience: Trying Kyudo at Kansai University Senriyama Campus

On 16th July, a Japanese cultural experience was held at Kansai University's Senriyama Campus as part of the "Japan Studies" course. The theme of this session was Kyudo (Japanese archery), and Bekka students had the opportunity to try Kyudo with the cooperation of the Kansai University Kyudo Club.

The class was conducted at the Kyudo Club's dojo. It began with an introduction by the club members, who explained the history and origins of Kyudo, as well as the activities and achievements of the Kansai University Kyudo Club. Learning how Kyudo has been passed down as a traditional Japanese cultural practice provided all participants with a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture.

Next came the long-awaited Kyudo experience.
Students held the bow and practiced shooting arrows at the target. Although many students were nervous at first, as it was their first time trying Kyudo, they gradually relaxed and were able to focus on their shots thanks to the careful and supportive guidance of the Kyudo Club members.
The Kyudo Club members were very kind, and the students were thrilled by this first-time experience. Several students even said, 'I want to join the Kyudo Club!'

Through this experience, the students further deepened their understanding of Japanese culture.

Graduate School of East Asian Cultures information session featuring a trial lecture

On July 3, the Kansai University Bekka program held a Graduate School of East Asian Cultures information session for Bekka students interested in pursuing graduate studies. The event featured a trial lecture by Associate Professor Kazuki Yoshikawa of the Graduate School of East Asian Cultures titled "Characteristics of Japanese Historiography: Focusing on East Asian History." The session provided participants with a valuable opportunity to experience graduate-level learning.

During the lecture, Associate Professor Yoshikawa introduced the fundamentals of graduate-level research and historical studies in an accessible and engaging manner. Students listened attentively, gaining a clearer understanding of what graduate school classes are like and the kinds of research conducted in the program.

The event also welcomed Suen, a former Bekka student who is currently enrolled in the Master's program of the Graduate School of East Asian Cultures. Drawing on her own experience, she shared insights into her current research and graduate school life. Her firsthand account of progressing from the Bekka program to graduate school was both informative and inspiring for the participants.

During the Q&A session, students asked many questions about choosing a research topic, preparing for graduate school, and academic life as a graduate student, reflecting their strong interest in further study.

The Kansai University Bekka program will continue to offer information sessions and networking opportunities like this to support students in their academic and career planning.

Cultural Exchange with Tsukumodai Elementary School in Suita City

On June 9, as part of the Japan Studies course, Bekka students visited Tsukumodai Elementary School in Suita City and participated in a cultural exchange program with first and second grade students.

The Bekka students were divided into groups and visited individual classrooms, where they introduced their home countries and regions through presentations featuring slides and quizzes. They shared information about their cultures, food, languages, and geography. The elementary school students listened with great interest, eagerly asked questions, and actively participated in the exchange.

After the presentations, the Bekka students and first-grade pupils enjoyed playing classroom games such as Fruit Basket, while the second-grade pupils played Rock-Paper-Scissors Train together in the gymnasium. These activities provided a fun opportunity for everyone to get to know one another.

The students then shared a school lunch in the classroom. Conversations flourished, with children excitedly pointing out the "lucky carrots", carrots cut into special shapes such as stars, cars, and hearts that are occasionally included in school lunches. During the lunch break, the Bekka students played with the children in the schoolyard and even joined them in cleaning the classrooms, experiencing everyday life at a Japanese elementary school, firsthand.

At the end of the visit, both the Bekka students and the children were reluctant to say goodbye. The children warmly said, "Please come again!" Many Bekka students commented on how energetic and enthusiastic the children were, and were especially impressed by how actively they asked questions and participated throughout the activities.

The visit provided Bekka students with a valuable opportunity to experience life at a Japanese elementary school and interact with local children. We also hope that the elementary school students gained a deeper appreciation of different cultures and languages through their interactions with the international students. Kansai University Bekka Program will continue to promote international understanding and strengthen ties with the local community through activities like this.

A Round-table Discussion with Former Bekka Students Held

On June 23, the Kansai University Bekka Program held a round-table discussion titled "Learning from Former Bekka Students."

This event was organized to help current Bekka students develop a clearer vision of their future studies and university life. Five former Bekka students who have advanced to Kansai University were invited as guest speakers, and 15 current students participated.

During the session, current students asked a variety of questions, including: "What are you currently studying in your faculty?", "What should we keep in mind while studying in the Bekka Program?", and "What do you find attractive about Kansai University after entering?"

Based on their own experiences, the former students shared practical advice about university life and preparation for further study. They also talked about what they had learned, how they had grown, and how they spent their time at university--insights that only those with firsthand experience could provide. The session became a valuable opportunity for participants.

The discussion also covered practical topics for students aiming to continue their studies, such as the importance of the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students), interview preparation, and effective approaches to studying while in the Bekka Program. The participants listened attentively and seriously considered their future academic paths.

At the end of the session, the former students encouraged them with warm messages such as: "Have confidence in yourselves and never give up on your dreams."

This roundtable provided Bekka students with a valuable opportunity to interact directly with former students, strengthen their motivation for further study, and take a step toward achieving their future goals.

Mock Lecture Held for Prospective Undergraduate Students

On May 18, a mock lecture titled "Intellectual Property Rights in Everyday Life: From Smartphones, Anime, and Music" was held by a faculty member from the Faculty of Law, Kansai University, for Bekka students interested in advancing to undergraduate programs.

This lecture aimed to provide students with an opportunity to experience a university-level class, based on topics related to their academic interests and future study plans, while also deepening their understanding of and motivation for further study.

During the lecture, students learned the basic concepts of intellectual property rights, including the differences and roles of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and design rights. The lecture used familiar examples such as smartphones, everyday products, and popular characters to make the topic more accessible. Issues related to counterfeit products and pirated content were also discussed, helping students understand the importance of properly protecting intellectual property rights. The lecture was conducted interactively, with active communication between the professor and students, allowing participants to gradually deepen their understanding of this specialized field, through familiar examples.

According to the post-lecture survey, many students responded that the lecture was "easy to understand" and "useful," indicating a high level of satisfaction. Some students also commented that they had become interested in studying law or hoped to pursue further studies in the legal field, making the event a valuable opportunity for considering their future academic pathways.

The Kansai University Bekka Program will continue to provide diverse learning opportunities tailored to students' interests and academic goals.

Field Trip to Arashiyama and Miyama in Kyoto

At the Kansai University Japanese Language and Culture Program Preparatory Course (Bekka), field trips are held twice a year to help students deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and society.

On May 16, Bekka students joined a field trip to Kyoto under the warm early-summer sunshine.

In the morning, the students experienced Yuzen dyeing, a traditional Japanese textile dyeing technique used for kimono. They learned that Yuzen dyeing was established in Kyoto in the late 17th century by the artist Miyazaki Yuzensai and has a history of more than 350 years. After learning about its history and techniques, each student designed and dyed their own handkerchief, creating unique works that reflected their individual creativity.

Afterward, the group moved to Arashiyama, Kyoto, where students enjoyed lunch and free time exploring the area. Many took walks around the famous Togetsukyo Bridge and enjoyed shopping and sightseeing in the beautiful Kyoto scenery.

In the afternoon, the students visited Miyama Kayabuki-no-Sato, one of Japan's three major traditional thatched-roof villages. They toured the historic houses and enjoyed strolling through the peaceful village while experiencing the atmosphere of traditional rural Japan.

The field trip provided a valuable opportunity for Bekka students from different classes to interact with one another and deepen their friendships. It also served as a refreshing break from their busy academic lives and became a memorable day filled with cultural learning and interaction.

Information Session on Undergraduate and Graduate School Advancement

On April 7 (Tuesday), an information session on advancement to undergraduate and graduate programs was held for Bekka students, with many students in attendance.

The Kansai University Bekka Program offers a variety of support systems for students wishing to continue their studies at Kansai University, including an academic advisor system and a special entrance examination for Bekka students. There are also scholarship programs available after enrollment.

On the day of the event, staff from the Admissions Center provided detailed explanations about the features of each faculty and graduate school, admission systems, and application procedures.

The participating students listened attentively, making the session a valuable opportunity for them to reflect on their future goals.

Awareness Seminar Conducted by Osaka Prefectural Police, Osaka Customs, and Osaka Immigration Bureau

On April 1, an awareness seminar was held at the Kansai University Bekka Program for 94 Bekka students, conducted by the Osaka Prefectural Police, Osaka Customs, and the Osaka Regional Immigration Services Bureau.

The Osaka Prefectural Police provided explanations, with concrete examples, about how lending one's residence card to others may lead to its misuse in crimes such as fraudulent mobile phone or credit card contracts and special fraud schemes.

They also offered important advice on how to avoid becoming involved in such criminal activities.

In addition, Osaka Customs gave guidance on the risks and legal consequences of bringing prohibited items, including illegal drugs, into Japan when entering the country.

The students listened attentively throughout the session and consolidated their awareness of the importance of following the guidance of relevant authorities in order to lead a safe and fulfilling student life in Japan.

Kansai University Bekka Program Holds Entrance Ceremony for Spring Semester 2026!

On April 2, the Entrance Ceremony for the Spring Semester 2026 of the Kansai University Bekka Program was held at Minami-Senri International Plaza, welcoming 46 new students.

At the ceremony, an opening address was delivered by the Director of the Center for International Education, Mitsuru Inada, followed by congratulatory remarks from Vice President Takeuchi and Executive Trustee, Kazuhiro Yabuta.

Next, representing the new students, Liu Liang (China) delivered a confident and composed pledge, expressing her determination for the academic journey ahead. The ceremony was conducted in a formal and dignified atmosphere, and the new students carefully followed Japanese-style etiquette such as standing and bowing.

Including the 46 Bekka students, a total of 94 new students began their studies at Kansai University the Bekka .

After the ceremony, a welcome reception was held, where Bekka faculty members offered warm messages of encouragement. They shared remarks such as:

"Welcome to Japan. Learning Japanese can sometimes be challenging, but it is also an exciting adventure. Learning a new language and culture is a wonderful opportunity for personal growth. Do not be afraid of making mistakes--communicate actively. Language is an important bridge that connects people."

The new students deepened their connections while enjoying light refreshments with faculty members and newly met classmates, taking their first step toward achieving their individual goals.

Kansai University Bekka Program holds Completion Ceremony for the Fall Semester 2025

On March 13, the Completion Ceremony for the Fall Semester 2025 of the Kansai University Bekka Program was held, and sixty-nine students successfully completed the program. During the ceremony, congratulatory and encouraging remarks were delivered to the graduates by Professor Takeuchi, Vice President, and Executive Trustee Mr. Yabuta.

In the valedictory address, the student representative, Tan Yilin, reflected on the time about two years ago when she was unsure whether to apply to the Kansai University Bekka Program. At that time, she was working as an English teacher at a high school, but she realized that her true passion lay in another field. With the belief of "doing one's best and leaving the rest to fate," she decided to apply to the Bekka Program.

She also referred to Minami-Senri, where the Bekka Program is located, quoting the saying "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." She described the program as the place where she took the important first step toward her future dreams. She spoke about overcoming the ups and downs of her study abroad life with the support of her classmates and expressed her gratitude to the teachers who guided and encouraged her. She also shared her joy at having been accepted into the Graduate School of Letters. Finally, she expressed her hope that the graduates would make use of the knowledge and experiences they gained in the Bekka Program as they pursue their own paths and that they would meet again in the future.

After the ceremony, a farewell reception was held, where the teachers offered warm messages to the graduates. While enjoying light refreshments together, the students shared memories with their friends and teachers. Carrying with them the friendships and memories they built in the Bekka Program, the graduates took a new step forward toward their respective goals.

At Senri Daiichi Elementary School in Suita City, located near Kansai University's Bekka Program, club activities for students in grades 4 through 6 are held once a month. Bekka students participate as volunteers in one of these clubs, the "World Discovery Club," where they introduce their home countries by teaching their languages and traditional games.

The elementary school students listen attentively to the Bekka students' stories, taking notes on Chinese characters and greetings in various languages. Some even say, "I'm going to teach this to my mom and dad when I get home!" Seeing the children's enthusiasm warms the hearts of the Bekka students, who truly enjoy interacting with them.

"Opportunities to teach elementary school children about my own culture and language are quite rare, and that is what makes this volunteer activity so valuable. The children didn't just listen--they asked many questions, which made me very happy. Through this experience, I was also able to interact with local people, making it a truly rewarding activity."(Antonio)

"This volunteer activity at an elementary school was a very precious experience. At first, I felt a bit nervous and worried about how to interact with the children and whether they would be interested in my country. However, once I arrived at the school, all the children were full of energy and constantly asked questions like, 'How do you say this in Chinese?' or 'How do you say it in Italian?' I had a great time. If I have the chance, I would love to participate again and share more about different countries."(Yang)

"I hope to become a teacher in the future, and thanks to Professor Murakami and Professor Terai, I was able to participate in this volunteer activity at Senri Daiichi Elementary School. The children showed strong interest in different cultures and actively participated with sparkling eyes. Through this experience, I realized how challenging it is to prepare materials that capture children's interest before class and to pay attention to every student during the lesson. I also learned that teachers should not only teach but also make sure that students truly understand. This experience strengthened my desire to become a teacher."(Kyo)

Even though their countries and languages are different, the children and Bekka students call each other by name and form close, friendly relationships. We hope that such meaningful exchanges will continue to grow within the local community.

International Exchange Program with Tsukumodai Elementary School, Suita City

As part of the "Japan Studｙ" class, Kansai University's Bekka Program conducted an international exchange activity with Tsukumodai Elementary School in Suita City. This program aimed to deepen cross-cultural understanding and promote "mutual growth-oriented career learning," in which both children and international students learn and grow together.

During the first class period, Bekka students introduced their home countries and regions, and the elementary school students gave presentations of their own. The Bekka students presented their cultures, languages, and daily lives through quizzes, offering small prizes to correct answers, which created a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout the session. Meanwhile, the elementary school students used tablets to give creative presentations about their school life and recommended local sightseeing spots. The high quality of these presentations left a strong impression on the Bekka students.

During the break, participants enjoyed various activities together, such as dodgeball and tag, playing card games, and touring the school. Many natural smiles were seen as the interaction deepened through these shared experiences.

In the second class period, the Bekka students gave presentations about what inspired them to study abroad and their future career paths. This session was held at the request of the elementary school as part of career education for sixth-grade students, who wished to hear directly about the real experiences of Bekka students. After the presentations, students formed small groups to discuss their own dreams and aspirations for the future.

The Bekka students shared reflections such as: "This gave me a chance to rethink my own goals," "I was able to show the children that there are many different ways of living," and "I gained confidence in expressing my thoughts in Japanese." Some also mentioned that hearing the children say they wanted to "turn what they love into a career" reminded them of their original motivations.

Teachers at the elementary school praised the activity, commenting that "It was impressive to see the Bekka students listening attentively at the same eye level as the children while taking notes," and that "Because they are closer in age, the Bekka students served as excellent role models." After the program, heartfelt letters from the elementary school students were sent to the Bekka students, who were delighted by the gesture. In return, the Bekka Program later sent thank-you postcards to the school.
