Title: International Exchange Volunteer Activities at "World Discovery Club" -- Senri Daiichi Elementary School

At Senri Daiichi Elementary School in Suita City, located near Kansai University's Bekka Program, club activities for students in grades 4 through 6 are held once a month. Bekka students participate as volunteers in one of these clubs, the "World Discovery Club," where they introduce their home countries by teaching their languages and traditional games.

The elementary school students listen attentively to the Bekka students' stories, taking notes on Chinese characters and greetings in various languages. Some even say, "I'm going to teach this to my mom and dad when I get home!" Seeing the children's enthusiasm warms the hearts of the Bekka students, who truly enjoy interacting with them.

Below are reflections from Bekka students who participated in the activity:

"Opportunities to teach elementary school children about my own culture and language are quite rare, and that is what makes this volunteer activity so valuable. The children didn't just listen--they asked many questions, which made me very happy. Through this experience, I was also able to interact with local people, making it a truly rewarding activity."(Antonio)

"This volunteer activity at an elementary school was a very precious experience. At first, I felt a bit nervous and worried about how to interact with the children and whether they would be interested in my country. However, once I arrived at the school, all the children were full of energy and constantly asked questions like, 'How do you say this in Chinese?' or 'How do you say it in Italian?' I had a great time. If I have the chance, I would love to participate again and share more about different countries."(Yang)

"I hope to become a teacher in the future, and thanks to Professor Murakami and Professor Terai, I was able to participate in this volunteer activity at Senri Daiichi Elementary School. The children showed strong interest in different cultures and actively participated with sparkling eyes. Through this experience, I realized how challenging it is to prepare materials that capture children's interest before class and to pay attention to every student during the lesson. I also learned that teachers should not only teach but also make sure that students truly understand. This experience strengthened my desire to become a teacher."(Kyo)

Even though their countries and languages are different, the children and Bekka students call each other by name and form close, friendly relationships. We hope that such meaningful exchanges will continue to grow within the local community.

International Exchange Program with Tsukumodai Elementary School, Suita City

As part of the "Japan Studｙ" class, Kansai University's Bekka Program conducted an international exchange activity with Tsukumodai Elementary School in Suita City. This program aimed to deepen cross-cultural understanding and promote "mutual growth-oriented career learning," in which both children and international students learn and grow together.

During the first class period, Bekka students introduced their home countries and regions, and the elementary school students gave presentations of their own. The Bekka students presented their cultures, languages, and daily lives through quizzes, offering small prizes to correct answers, which created a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout the session. Meanwhile, the elementary school students used tablets to give creative presentations about their school life and recommended local sightseeing spots. The high quality of these presentations left a strong impression on the Bekka students.

During the break, participants enjoyed various activities together, such as dodgeball and tag, playing card games, and touring the school. Many natural smiles were seen as the interaction deepened through these shared experiences.

In the second class period, the Bekka students gave presentations about what inspired them to study abroad and their future career paths. This session was held at the request of the elementary school as part of career education for sixth-grade students, who wished to hear directly about the real experiences of Bekka students. After the presentations, students formed small groups to discuss their own dreams and aspirations for the future.

The Bekka students shared reflections such as: "This gave me a chance to rethink my own goals," "I was able to show the children that there are many different ways of living," and "I gained confidence in expressing my thoughts in Japanese." Some also mentioned that hearing the children say they wanted to "turn what they love into a career" reminded them of their original motivations.

Teachers at the elementary school praised the activity, commenting that "It was impressive to see the Bekka students listening attentively at the same eye level as the children while taking notes," and that "Because they are closer in age, the Bekka students served as excellent role models." After the program, heartfelt letters from the elementary school students were sent to the Bekka students, who were delighted by the gesture. In return, the Bekka Program later sent thank-you postcards to the school.

Japanese Cultural Experience: Trying Kyudo at Kansai University Senriyama Campus!

On Wednesday, December 17, a Japanese cultural experience was held at Kansai University's Senriyama Campus as part of the "Japan Studies" course. The theme of this session was Kyudo (Japanese archery), and Bekka students had the opportunity to try Kyudo with the cooperation of the Kansai University Kyudo Club.

The class was conducted at the Kyudo Club's dojo. It began with an introduction by the club members, who explained the history and origins of Kyudo, as well as the activities and achievements of the Kansai University Kyudo Club. Learning how Kyudo has been passed down as a traditional Japanese cultural practice provided all participants with a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture.

Next came the long-awaited Kyudo experience.
Students held the bow and practiced shooting arrows at the target. Although many students were nervous at first, as it was their first time trying Kyudo, they gradually relaxed and were able to focus on their shots thanks to the careful and supportive guidance of the Kyudo Club members.
The Kyudo Club members were very kind, and the students were thrilled by this first-time experience. Several students even said, 'I want to join the Kyudo Club!'

Through this experience, the students further deepened their understanding of Japanese culture.

Visit to Osaka Prefectural Central School for the Deaf as Part of the Academic Japanese Course

On November 26, students of the Kansai University Bekka Program visited the Osaka Prefectural Central School for the Deaf as part of the "Academic Japanese" course, engaging in cultural exchange activities including presentations about their home countries and regions.

This course focuses on developing students' communication skills through presentations and discussions on specialized topics. For this visit, the theme was "Communicating with people who have diverse characteristics," providing an opportunity to put into practice what students had learned in the classroom.

In preparation, the students read academic texts on information accessibility and communication support, summarized the content, and presented it in class. Through this, they learned the importance of adapting their communication methods according to others' needs and characteristics. The visit served as a practical extension of this learning.

On the day of the visit, twenty-four Bekka students, divided into five groups, interacted with about twenty junior high school students at the school. In the first activity, the international students introduced their home countries and regions, their national sign languages, and schools for the deaf in their countries. They used a combination of photos, written text, and sign language they had practiced specifically for this visit.

The junior high school students also actively communicated using sign language and written messages on the board. Communication naturally took shape without relying solely on spoken language, as both sides made efforts to express themselves clearly.

In the second half of the program, students enjoyed a lively game of "Sign Language Karuta," forming mixed teams of Bekka students and the school's students. The　classroom was filled with smiles as participants worked together, using sign language clues, striving toward a shared goal.

Before the exchange, a teacher at the school shared the following message:
"We would like to observe how our students communicate in an environment where sign language is not universally understood. The Bekka students may also face challenges, but we hope both sides will grow through mutual effort."

As the teacher anticipated, both the junior high school students and Bekka students approached communication difficulties with a positive attitude. They used a variety of strategies--sign language, gestures, facial expressions, and writing on the board--experimenting and adjusting as they interacted.

The experience allowed everyone to discover the possibilities of communication beyond spoken language and provided a meaningful opportunity for mutual learning across differences.

Tea Ceremony Experience in the "Japanese Studies" Class of the Bekka Program

On November 12, students of the Kansai University Bekka Program participated in a tea ceremony experience as part of the "Japan Studies" course, held in the tearoom on the Senriyama Campus. With guidance from members of the Tea Ceremony Club, the Bekka students had a valuable opportunity to try authentic Japanese tea ceremony for the first time.

The class began with a lecture by the Tea Ceremony Club. Students listened attentively as they learned about the history, terminology, and etiquette of tea ceremony. During the hands-on practice that followed, the students tried sitting in the traditional seiza position--unfamiliar to many--while carefully learning each movement. Despite the sense of tension, many students were visibly enjoying the depth and elegance of tea ceremony.

The sweet served on this occasion was a nerikiri confection inspired by "autumn foliage." Its delicate beauty and refined taste impressed all participants. Through this seasonal confection, the students gained further insight into the cultural charm of Japanese tea ceremony.

Experiencing Japanese culture in the special setting of the campus tearoom created unforgettable memories for the Bekka students. Kansai University Bekka Program will continue to offer a variety of cultural activities utilizing campus facilities. We hope you look forward to future events!

Roundtable with Bekka Alumni: Learning from Senior Students

On November 12, Kansai University's Japanese Language and Culture Program Preparatory Course (Bekka) held a special event titled "Roundtable with Bekka Alumni: Learning from Senior Students."

The event was designed to help current Bekka students envision their future studies and research life after completing the program. A total of 26 current students and 8 alumni participated.

The roundtable consisted of two parts: a general Q&A session and small-group discussions. All aspects of the event　were organized by Bekka students themselves, making the session not only an informative opportunity but also a valuable learning experience.

During the general session, alumni shared their experiences of studying and conducting research at Kansai University, responding to questions prepared in advance by current students.

In the following group discussions, students asked more in-depth questions--about topics such as laboratory environments, interpersonal relationships, how to write a research proposal, and study styles--that are rarely covered in formal information sessions.

Throughout the event, many students listened attentively to the alumni's stories, taking notes and reflecting seriously on their own academic paths.

This roundtable served as a meaningful opportunity for Bekka students to interact directly with their seniors and gain greater motivation toward their future studies.

Kansai University Bekka Students Enjoy an Autumn Field Trip to Tamba-Sasayama

At Kansai University's Japanese Language and Culture Program Preparatory Course (Bekka), two field trips are held each year to deepen students' understanding of Japanese culture and society.

On November 1, about 80 Bekka students visited Tamba-Sasayama City under the guidance of faculty and staff. It was a fulfilling day of learning and interaction outside the classroom, under a beautiful autumn sky.

The first stop was the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum, where students learned about the life and works of Osamu Tezuka, the legendary manga artist behind classics such as Astro Boy and Black Jack. Many students who are interested in anime were especially excited to see Tezuka's creations on display, their faces lighting up with enthusiasm.

Afterwards, the group took a stroll through the streets of Tamba-Sasayama, enjoying the calm and historic atmosphere of the castle town while experiencing local specialties and traditional architecture.

In the afternoon, students tried their hand at hand-molding pottery. Each student shaped clay into bowls or small plates using their hands. For many, it was their first pottery experience, and their focused expressions as they imagined their finished works left a lasting impression.

The trip provided a wonderful opportunity for Bekka students--who usually study in different classrooms--to connect with one another amid the deepening colors of autumn and the beauty of nature.

Fire Drill was held

A fire drill was conducted at the Kansai University Japanese Language Program for International Students on the 27^th of October.
The drill simulated a fire breaking out in the kitchen on the third floor of the dormitory, with flames bursting from the window, making initial extinguishing impossible.

Inside the dormitory, the RAs (Resident Assistants) took the lead in guiding the evacuation, while the faculty efficiently supported students' evacuation in the classroom building. From the moment the fire was reported until the roll call at the assembly point in the patio was completed, this year's drill took 10 minutes and 36 seconds. Although this was slightly longer than last year's 8 minutes, we will continue to improve our response by raising disaster awareness and promoting safe actions.

Japan is a country prone to disasters, including earthquakes. It is essential to maintain disaster awareness in daily life and to act quickly and accurately in case of an emergency.

After the drill, the RAs first learned how to use fire extinguishers, and then interested Bekka students also had the opportunity to practice under the guidance of the RAs. This drill provided a valuable opportunity for all students and staff to deepen their understanding of disaster preparedness.

Entrance Ceremony for the 2025 Fall Semester Bekka Program Held

On September 24, the Entrance Ceremony for the 2025 Fall Semester at Kansai University's Japanese Language and Culture Program Preparatory Course (Bekka) was held at the Minami-Senri International Plaza　Campus, welcoming 50 new students from the United States, Indonesia, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Mongolia.

The ceremony featured an opening address by the Director of the Center for International Education, Mitsuru Inada and congratulatory remarks by Vice President Takeuchi and Executive Trustee Mr. Yabuta. In addition, we were honored to welcome a distinguished guest, Mr. Stephen Money, Deputy Director of the Academic Exchange Programs Division, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State, who delivered a congratulatory and encouraging speech in Japanese to the new students.

Following this, Ms. He Shiyu from China, representing the new students, gave a confident and heartfelt declaration of her commitment to study.

After the ceremony, a welcome reception was held, during which each Bekka faculty member offered words of encouragement. The new students enjoyed light refreshments while engaging in conversations with faculty and newly met friends, taking their first steps toward achieving their individual goals.

The Spring 2025 Course Completion Ceremony

On September 12, the Completion Ceremony for the Spring Semester 2025 of Kansai University's Japanese Language and Culture Program Preparatory Course (Bekka) was held, and 25 students successfully completed the program.
At the ceremony, Professor Takeuchi, Vice President, and Executive Trustee Mr. Yabuta delivered words of congratulations and encouragement to the graduates.

Representing the graduating class, Mr. JANG JAE HYEUK reflected on his studies and the days spent with his peers at the Bekka. He spoke of the challenges of studying abroad, noting that the journey had not always been smooth, but emphasized, "It is precisely because we encouraged and inspired one another that we are able to celebrate this day together." He also expressed his hope that the knowledge and experiences gained at the Bekka would bear fruit in each graduate's future life.

In closing his speech, Mr. Jang shared a proverb from his home country:
"Those who meet must part, and those who part shall surely meet again." He remarked, "Partings are never easy to accept, but I look forward to the day when I can meet everyone again sometime in the future."

Following the ceremony, a farewell gathering was held. Teachers offered warm messages, and the graduates reminisced with their friends and instructors over light refreshments. With friendships and memories built at the Bekka in their hearts, the graduates each took a new step forward toward their future goals.

Participating in the Tenjin Festival Boat Procession!

On July 18, under clear summer skies, the grand finale of one of Japan's three major festivals--the Tenjin Festival's Boat Procession (Funatogyo)--was held in Osaka.

Following a tradition where the deity of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is said to tour the city by boat, the "Kandaimaru" worship boat set sail once again this year.
Four students from Kansai University's Bekka (Japanese Language and Culture Program) boarded the boat and enjoyed the stunning fireworks lighting up the summer night sky from the water.

It was an unforgettable cultural experience and a special memory of their time studying abroad in Japan.
At Bekka, we will continue to create opportunities for international students to take part in local festivals and experience Japanese culture firsthand!

Nagashi Somen Event Held at the Dormitory!

At the Minami-Senri International Plaza Dormitory, we held an exciting summer event featuring nagashi somen, a classic Japanese summer tradition!
Students enjoyed catching chilled somen noodles flowing down a special bamboo slide with chopsticks -- a fun and refreshing experience that everyone loved!

Originating in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu in 1955, nagashi somen has now become a beloved summer activity all over Japan.
Thanks to the wonderful support of our Resident Assistants (RAs), the event was a great success!

The dormitory hosts around eight seasonal activities every year. We hope everyone continues to join, have fun, and deepen friendships!

Tea Ceremony Experience

On June 25th, as part of the "Japan Studies" class, students from the Bekka (Japanese Language and Culture Program Preparatory Course) at Kansai University participated in their first tea ceremony experience at the traditional tea room on the Senriyama Campus, guided by members of the university's tea ceremony club.

The session began with a lecture by a member of the tea ceremony club, where students learned about tea ceremony terms and etiquette. They listened attentively, eager to understand the cultural significance behind each aspect.

During the hands-on practice of temae (tea preparation), students carefully followed each step of the process while experiencing seiza (sitting formally on the floor)--a posture unfamiliar to many of them. Despite some initial nervousness, they gradually relaxed and enjoyed the elegance of the tea ceremony.

The highlight of the experience was a beautifully crafted nerikiri sweeta (type of Japanese confectionery made from a paste of white beans and glutinous rice flour), inspired by the early summer season. Its delicate design and flavor left a lasting impression on everyone. Through this, students also learned that seasonal sweets are an essential part of tea ceremony culture, adding depth and meaning to the experience.

This event provided students with a rare opportunity to engage in authentic Japanese cultural practice within a traditional tea room on campus.

Special Lecture on "Japan Studies"

On June 11, Kansai University's Japanese Language and Culture Program Preparatory Course (Bekka) held a special lecture titled "Sign Language and Japanese - Linguistic Coexistence of the Deaf" as part of the "Japan Studies,".

We welcomed Lecturer Takeshi Nakashima from Hyogo University of Teacher Education, who delivered a thought-provoking talk exploring topics such as what sign language is, the relationship between the Deaf community and the Japanese language, and the question "Are Deaf people considered disabled?"
Through interactive activities, including actual sign language demonstrations, Lecturer Nakashima approached these issues from both linguistic and social perspectives.

Drawing on his personal background as a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), his stories were deeply authentic and resonated strongly with the students, who listened with great interest and focus.

After the lecture, students shared reflections such as "I never realized how deep sign language really is" and "This made me rethink what true coexistence means." It was a meaningful and eye-opening experience for everyone involved.

Moving forward, the "Japan Studies" class will continue to explore diverse themes to deepen students' understanding of Japanese culture and society.
