On June 27, the European Center hosted a seminar titled "Discovering Europe; Diversity and LGBTQ in Belgium: The Perspective of the Ambassador of Belgium to Japan," at the Senriyama Campus. The event was conducted in a hybrid format, combining in-person and online sessions, and attracted a total of 86 participants.
His Excellency Antoine Evrard, Ambassador of Belgium to Japan and a graduate of KU Leuven, Kansai University's partner university, served as the keynote speaker. Kansai University Vice President Chieko Otsuru participated as a panelist, with two exchange students from KU Leuven provided simultaneous interpretation.
At the beginning of the lecture, Ambassador Evrard addressed the audience, acknowledging that some might wonder why the Belgian Ambassador would discuss equal marriage. He explained that Belgium is a society that deeply respects diversity and that equal marriage was legalized there in 2003. He also highlighted the human rights policies of the European Union, of which Belgium is a member. Ambassador Evrard then explored the significance of legalizing equal marriage from four key perspectives: equality and justice, stability and security, anti-discrimination movements, and the respect for fundamental human rights.
Following the Ambassador's lecture, Professor Otsuru provided an overview of Japan's partnership system, notable lawsuits and court decisions regarding same-sex marriage, and responses from local governments and companies. She also discussed Kansai University's efforts to promote diversity. The participants engaged deeply with these relevant topics, enhancing their understanding of the issues.
The seminar also featured an interactive Q&A session with Ambassador Evrard and Professor Otsuru. The discussion expanded to include questions about Japanese legislation and LGBTQ education, as well as insights from the Ambassador's personal experiences. The session concluded with a powerful message: "Participating in activities that respect diversity is a way of expressing a commitment to non-prejudice. It is important to have a society where everyone can freely and safely express themselves."
Kansai University has adopted the "Basic Policy on Gender Equality" and the "Kansai University Declaration on the Promotion of Diversity." The university is actively implementing various initiatives to promote diversity across education, research, social cooperation, internationalization, and other areas.
