President Harushige KUSUMI

In September 2012 Kansai University applied to participate in and was selected for the Project for Establishing an International Exchange Program. The project entails practical research and investigation into creation of a “home away from home for foreign students” (Harmonic Osaka Multicultural Environs: H.O.M.E.—“Advancing New Town: The Next 50 Years”) through a consortium of local organizations, industry, and universities.

To facilitate admission of foreign students, this project aims to promote exchanges through cooperation between the university and local governing bodies, the financial world, NPOs, and other organizations, and to support the livelihoods and employment of foreign students in the community at large. At the same time, the project aims to revitalize the Osaka region by creating a framework that utilizes the potential of foreign students.

In order to achieve these goals, Kansai University will work in cooperation with neighboring Osaka University to develop a comprehensive academic agreement. Both universities have long traditions in the Osaka City and north Osaka Prefecture regions. President Kusumi will do his utmost to contribute to internationalization and to revitalize not just the university but the local area and corporations through a distinctive program that only a regional university could develop. We ask for your support in our endeavor.

MEXT plans to enhance interaction between foreign and Japanese students, local citizens, children, corporations, etc. in each region of the country to support the livelihoods and employment opportunities of foreign students in the community at large. This will be done through collaboration between universities, local governing bodies, regional economic organizations, NPOs, and volunteer groups as a local consortium with the universities at the core. MEXT has contracted with universities for the project of revitalizing local economies with the help of foreign students to create a framework that allows contribution to building communities and supporting education. Ten universities in Japan have been selected for this project. The successful project will be used as a model for universities and local governments throughout the country with the aim of promoting further international exchange.
Note: Three universities were added to this project in 2013.
