Announcement of the International Meeting "Saving Archaeological Heritage in Saqqara – Ten Years achievements of Kansai University Mission"

The Research Center is holding the International Meeting "Saving Archaeological Heritage in Saqqara – Ten Years achievements of Kansai University Mission" on November 8 and 9, 2017, at the Saqqara Palm Club, Egypt.

Kansai University is proceeding the project on conservation of cultural heritage, focusing on the Mastaba Idout in Saqqara, Egypt. The project has been continued for more than 10 years mainly by Institute for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Properties, ICP(2008-2013)and Center for the Global Study of Cultural Heritage and Culture, CHC(2013-2018)established in Kansai University. The project has achieved a plenty of research efforts through various approaches from Egyptology, Conservation Science, Biology, Engineering, Scientific Documentation, and Cultural Heritage Management. The International Meeting, titled “Saving Archaeological Heritage in Saqqara: Ten Years Achievements of Kansai University,” will provide an opportunity for sharing the research progress of comprehensive studies on Mastaba Idout among the experts of cultural heritage and related fields. Also the international meeting aims to have a discussion with local conservators about saving and utilizing the Saqqara archaeological heritage in the future.

The Second Seminar on Egyptology and Monuments

The CHC invites eight researchers from the Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University. The second "Seminar on Egyptology and Monuments" will be held in January 23rd and 24th, 2016. The seminar will be the second attempt in Japan to approach the research fields of Egyptology and monument preservation in Egypt in a technical and multifaceted fashion.

A symposium will be held at CHC entitled (Preservation of Cultural Heritage ~Local Challenges and Activities) at Kansai University, in Osaka on February 27-28, 2016. The aim of the meeting is to present and discuss recent situation of Saqqara monuments as well as the cultural properties in different countries.

Masaaki Sawada (Cultural Heritage Restoration Group), a CHC researcher, gave an intensive lecture series entitled, "Scientific Research on Cultural Property (Fall)," at Kansai University Graduate School from Wednesday, January 28, 2015, to Friday, January 30, 2015.
The goal of the lecture series was to provide students with basic scientific knowledge of cultural heritage preservation and restoration, and to promote a greater understanding of how this knowledge is applied to actual preservation and restoration techniques by using real examples.

As part of the Joint Press Release on Projects between Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Universities/Research Organizations, a joint exhibit was held from Sunday, December 1st, 2013 to around the end of March 2014, showcasing CHC's research activities.

The exhibit highlighted our major efforts to preserve and restore the cultural heritage of ancient Egypt.

The CHC hosted the "Seminar on the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage 2013" from Wednesday, March 5, to Tuesday, March 11, 2014, in collaboration with the Japan Conservation Project, a non-profit organization. Researchers, engineers, and other lead experts in the field were invited as instructors to give lectures to university students pursuing their interests in the related fields of cultural heritage studies and the general public who want to learn about the preservation of cultural heritage.

Lecturers from the CHC included Hiroshi Suita (Egyptology, Egyptian Society Group), Masaaki Sawada (Cultural Heritage Restoration Group), Tadateru Nishiura (Cultural Heritage Restoration Group), and Kosuke Takatori (Science and Technology Group).

A CHC member, Prof. Tatsuaki Nishigata's (Science and Technology Group) research was featured in the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun newspaper on June 12, 2013. Through joint efforts with industry, Prof. Nishigata invented a stabilization method using rods to maintain and restore aging stone walls and other cultural assets.

A research mission conducted by Prof. Tadateru Nishiura (Cultural Heritage Restoration Group) and his team was introduced in the morning edition of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper on August 21, 2013 (western Tokyo). The members of his team included Prof. Atsushi Ito (Science and Technology Group) and Prof. Tatsuaki Nishigata (Science and Technology Group).

After the project entitled "Comprehensive Global Studies for Utilizing Cultural Heritage" was approved by the Strategic Project to Support the Formation of Research Bases at Private Universities under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Center for the Global Study of Cultural Heritage and Culture was established for the five-year period from 2013 to 2017.
