KUGF Independent Study(English Skills Development)This class aims to develop all areas of English skills through a variety of formats, including paragraph and essay writing, discussion and debating, as well as in-class presentations. Students will be required to work in random pairs and random groups, and must have a mind of co-operation and collaboration. 2 creditsSpring SemesterFall SemesterKUGF Field Study(Global Awareness I / Global Awareness II)This course will deepen Kansai University students’ global aware-ness by introducing them to an interdisciplinary approach to international and global studies, and drawing on real-world examples from diverse cultural regions to illustrate 21st-century trends and challenges through Collaborative Online International Learning exchange. In COIL projects, Kansai University students will work collaboratively with students from overseas universities to complete tasks given throughout the project.The student who successfully completed this course is eligible to participate in short-term study abroad program to Fashion Institute of Technology in New York or Kapi’olani Community College in Hawai’i. U.S. Scholarship may be available for participating students. More details on the scholarship can be found on Global NAVI website.This short visiting study abroad program is a faculty-led program and the instructor will supervise and provide language assistance (English) to the participating students during their short visit.2 creditsSpring SemesterFall SemesterKUGF Independent Study(Doing a Research in English)This course will help students develop skills necessary for research so that they can become independent researchers. The class will cover topics that help students to think critically and foster skills that are essential when writing research papers and presenting in English. Through class assignments, the class will encourage students to express their opinions and explain their ideas using references. Over the semester, students will increase their knowledge about researching in English and will conduct their own research. At the end of the semester, students are expected to present their research to class and hand in an academic paper to the adviser.2 creditsSpring SemesterFall SemesterKANSAI UNIVERSITY GLOBAL FRONTIER14ASEAN StudiesIn this course, students will learn about the culture and society of countries in ASEAN (Association of South‐East Asian Nations) Region. Students will work in groups, with each group choosing one of the ten countries to study in more details. Areas of study may range across a number of dimensions, including history, ethnic demography, gender roles, societal changes in the contemporary area, relationship with Japan, youth culture, social welfare, education system, and social issues specific to the country. Each group will share the results of their investigations with other group members. The course will feature (i) guest speakers who are from the ASEAN countries during the semester, and (ii) virtual communication with the peers in these countries with the use of ICT tools specifically COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning).2 creditsSpring SemesterFall SemesterCross-Cultural CompetenceIn this course, students are given opportunities to develop cross-cultural and intercultural competence through various activities, such as contrasting and comparing aspects of various culture, or participating in discussions among participants from different backgrounds. It enhances students' abilities to understand, evaluate, and provide culturally sensitive and competent human services to members of diverse groups. This course gives students the opportunity to reflect upon their own cultural development and to be more sensitive to others. This course will engage in COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning).2 creditsSpring SemesterFall SemesterKUGF Field Study(Business Experience Abroad)This course will enable Kansai University students to experi-ence Business field overseas. In AY2019, students will spend approximately two weeks in Thailand.2 creditsSpring SemesterStudents have to participate the training held in June to July before their trips to Thailand in August, and they will gener-ate a report on a particular theme related to their experience in business field in Thailand. Students will be hosted by CP ALL Public Company and Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM) both located in Bangkok city. Depending on how many students apply, there may be another internship site may be considered as well (in Bangkok). The main activity for this course is to experience what it is like to work in Thailand, by being present and assisting the employees in the CP ALL Bangkok office.The students will also have opportunities to visit to affiliated company of CP ALL Public Company during their stay. 2 creditsSpring SemesterFall SemesterKUGF Field Study(International Collaborative Learning)This course will enable students in Japan to collaboratively learn with peers overseas, particularly in the following types of programs: 1 Summer Short-term programs held in Thailand (Japanese TA- experience Program in Thailand), Taiwan (Three-University Collab-orative Learning Program in Taiwan), or Vietnam (PBL Program in Hanoi)2 COIL + (Plus) short visiting program, associated with Japan-US Inter-Exchange University Program Initiative by Kansai University, Instituite for Innovative Global Education (AY 2019) 3 UMAP-COIL Joint Honors Program (AY 2019) Winter COIL + (Plus) short visiting program, associated with Japan- US Inter-Exchange University Program Initiative by Kansai Univer-sity, Instituite for Innovative Global Education (AY 2019) Participation in this course will require to pay the partial expense of their trip to Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam or Hawaii.
