The emblem is comprised of the word "DAIGAKU" and reed around it. It is said that reed represents Kansai University’s academic culture - simple, earnest, and sturdy - which has developed since its foundation as Kansai Law School in Osaka in 1886. Reed is known as a strong plant, which withstands wind and rain, growing in shallow water of Yodogawa running through Osaka.
The emblem encased by three Latin words - seal, Kansai University, and 1886 - was originally designed as a seal for a pamphlet in English aimed at promoting international academic exchange with overseas universities, including Columbia University. Late president Uichi Iwasaki earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Columbia University as one of the first overseas students from Kansai University.
Latin words were commonly used as the design of a seal in Ivy League universities, like Columbia University, where the studies of Latin language and Latin classics were regarded as one of key majors.
